I do not understand why were are disappointed or surprised that we are technically inferior to the best teams in Europe? As fans that watch the Premier League week in, week out, we are treated to the best football that can be seen anywhere in the world. But it is a unique brand of football.
Premier League football is based around counter attacking; teams rarely achieve more than 55-58% possession, and the objective is to score as quickly as possible. Continental football is much more measured, and centres around keeping the ball until an 'easy' opportunity arises. England are inexperienced in this style, as our young players are not coached in this way and therefore do not have the technical ability. The great English players (only Gerrard, Rooney, Terry, Cole and Hart?) are in teams which also have foreign players to help them win trophies.
It is refreshing to see Roy Hodgson come into the job, tell the players that they are underdogs (which we are) and to play to their strengths in order to nullify the threat of technical teams. If we have realised this 10 years ago we may have won something. I remember the days when Germany and Italy would reach the latter stages of tournaments purely based on their organisation and discipline, and they would be praised for it.
Against Spain, Germany, Holland, Russia, France, Italy and Croatia I'd say we'd be better of with our containment strategy (as vs France) and see where it gets us, because anything else, quite frankly, will expose us badly. I'm looking forward to tomorrows game and am expecting a 2-1 win.
