The Times: Luis Suárez Earns Substantial Pay Rise
Luis Suárez has become the first significant beneficiary of Liverpool’s performance-related pay initiative after his salary broke the £100,000-a-week barrier as a direct result of his outstanding form this season.
Suárez signed a new long-term contract last summer, which meant his basic wage doubled to £80,000 per week, but Liverpool also opted to incorporate financial incentives that would be triggered in the event of the Uruguayan reaching certain targets.
Having played in all but one of Liverpool’s Barclays Premier League games this season and scored 21 goals in 27 appearances, Suárez has earned a substantial increase, understood to be more than £30,000 per week, which the club hierarchy believes represents value for money and recognition of their commitment to the 26-year-old.
Suárez’s status as the league’s top scorer has increased his appeal to rival clubs and Liverpool recognise that he is likely to be the subject of transfer interest again in the summer. But they remain confident that the forward will not pursue a move, partly because of their willingness to reward him.
Liverpool’s desire to ensure that they are never again in a situation in which they are obliged to pay disproportionate salaries to underperforming players was prompted by a review of contracts by Fenway Sports Group after its takeover of the club in October 2010.
The feeling that Liverpool were getting insufficient value for money from their squad was behind an admission from John W. Henry, their principal owner, that he had been taken aback by the lack of quality in a playing staff that was costing in excess of £100 million.
“The worst surprise was the lack of depth in the squad,” Henry told FourFourTwo magazine in April 2011. “There was a huge multi-year payroll for a squad that had very little depth.”
The financial impact of the contracts is still being felt and provoked a series of cost-cutting measures, which have led to Liverpool’s wage bill being reduced by more than £15 million in the past year. Brendan Rodgers, the manager, has bought in to the strategy and believes that the move towards performance-related payments will have only a positive effect.
The template for Suárez’s deal is likely to be followed in future contract negotiations as Liverpool look to ensure that there is as direct a correlation as possible between earnings and performance.
