Manchester United Executive Vice-chairman Ed Woodward has today reiterated the stance the club have taken over want away striker Wayne Rooney. United don’t want to sell him and won’t if they don’t have to. It is unknown as to whether the player wants to stay at the club, and his injury which has kept him out of the pre-season tour has added to speculation, rather than stopped it.
“I’m not surprised clubs like Chelsea and Arsenal want Wayne – he’s a top player. He’s not for sale and we won’t be selling him.”

Woodward was also keen to highlight the fact that United were in the market for a stellar signing, of which Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale have already been suggested. Sir Alex Ferguson spoke in March, saying everything was ready for a big signing. Woodward said:
“We are not looking to change the way we do things – it’s been a successful formula.
“We want the manager to be investing. We are not in the business of delivering him players. That structure works for some, but not here at United.
“Take Robin van Persie. We went in hard for him even though he was 29.
“We have never had a policy that we won’t buy older more experienced players and that showed itself with Robin.
“We backed Sir Alex Ferguson – we will do the same with David Moyes.”
