Man United target £29.3m Reus in January
Manchester United know they need to offer £29.3million for Marco Reus to trigger his buy-out clause with Borussia Dortmund.
The key is whether 24-year-old Reus wants to leave mid-season. The Germans are pushing to convince him to sign a revised contract so they can change his clause and the player maintains he is content at Dortmund despite the club going through a period of transition.
United manager David Moyes is facing a tough challenge to bring in the type of players he wants in January.
United scouts have been asking for 'world class players for every position'. Although midfield remains their priority, they are also keenly looking for attacking players, a left-back and centre-back with the futures of Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand coming into question at the end of the season.
The Premier League champions have the funds, they were prepared to outbid Real Madrid on all fronts in their attempt to sign Gareth Bale in the summer but the Welshman was intent on a move to Spain.
The main trouble lies with value for money in January and the fact most of the players they want are tied up with Champions League clubs who are reluctant to sell their prized assets.
Real Madrid's Angel di Maria and Luka Modric remain on United's radar as does left-back Fabio Coentrao. However, Carlo Ancelotti wants a permanent deal rather than initial loan for the Portuguese and United are a little unsure over his lack of game time.
They are reluctant to become involved in another saga over Leighton Baines with Everton while Southampton's Luke Shaw is likely to stay for another season on the South Coast. Sevilla's Alberto Moreno has also been watched but at £25m seems a gamble. Coentrao may yet be the simplest option.
United have also been keeping a watchful eye on forward options. Javier Hernandez has been struggling to hit form, Danny Welbeck and Robin Van Persie are nursing injuries while Wayne Rooney's future is unlikely to be resolved until after the World Cup. Aston Villa's Christian Benteke has been mentioned and United have been joined in their interest by Chelsea while Tottenham remain admirers of the Belgian too.
Villa, wary of pending offers, have been watching the likes of PSV Eindhoven's Jurgen Locadia, 20, who Liverpool watched last year.
