What's the latest?
Liverpool are rumoured to be lining up a transfer for Benfica's promising midfielder Andre Gomes, perhaps with an eye on the future with Steven Gerrard in his 30s and Lucas' history of injury. The 20-year-old's chances have been limited in the first team with Nemanja Matic blocking his path before joining Chelsea, while the fee of £12.4m being discussed seems a lot for a player who has yet to play regularly. It has been reported that agent Jorge Mendes bought the youngster's economic rights for €15m, so any future transfer fee will be negotiated through him. As a result, Gomes could eventually go for even more than the £12m banded about in various publications if Mendes has profits on his mind. There are stories circulating that he could try and sell Gomes to Man City for a tidy sum.
Did you know?
1) Gomes joined Benfica in 2011 and a year after the 18-year-old's move, he was celebrating a goal scoring debut in a 3-0 away win against Gil Vicente. He had previously played for both Porto and Boavista's youth teams.
2) Last summer talkSPORT reported Chelsea's interest in Benfica's bright young thing. He had just begun showing signs of his class in the first team, but manager Jose Mourinho later opted for his more senior team-mate, Nemanja Matic.
3) Physically Gomes is very strong and has the attributes to become the complete midfielder he is expected to be. His dynamic play between defence and attack are assisted by his passing. This season in two Champions League games, he has made an average of 14.5 passes with a 96 per cent pass rate. He won praise for his display against Barcelona in last season's Champions League as Benfica held the Spanish champions to a 0-0 draw at the Camp Nou.
4) Gomes is still waiting for his senior international debut, but has represented his country from U17 level through to the the U21. There he has scored once in four appearances, with the solitary goal coming in a 6-1 thumping of Poland. At the U20 World Cup in 2013, the midfielder played three times before his nation were knocked out by Ghana in the last 16.
