‘Super Frankie Lampard’ was more than an employee of Chelsea FC. He was an emblem and a trophy-gatherer
The Shed, the Matthew Harding Upper and Lower and other Royal Blue parts of the Bridge will salute Lampard on Saturday but not during the 90 minutes that could define the Premier League season. But they will acknowledge Lampard’s formidable contribution to the most special period in the club’s long history, an existence starting in the year when suffragettes were padlocking more than bicycles to railings in London.
In 110 years at the Bridge, Chelsea have never witnessed anything like the joys of the Lampard epoch. Even in the time of Roy Bentley. Even the periods graced by Jimmy Greaves, Bobby Tambling, Peter Osgood, Dennis Wise and Zola cannot come close to rivalling the Lampard years.
For a generation of Chelsea fans, “Super Frankie Lampard” turned their dreams into reality. He brought trophies: three Premier Leagues, four FA Cups, two League Cups, the Champions League and Europa League. He scored goals: a record 211, eclipsing Tambling’s mark, including tallies of 13, 16 and 22 in the league triumphs of 2004-05, 05-06 and 09-10 respectively. From midfield.
