American authorities including the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) are currently investigating the Leo Messi & Friends Charity matches which took place in Colombia in 2012 and 2013.
Leo Messi has a rather murky history regarding tax fraud, along with Barcelona teammates Neymar Jr. and more recently Javier Mascherano.
The two friendly matches, which featured a host of world class players, are being investigated for possible laundering of proceeds of drug trafficking.
According to reliable Spanish newspaper El Mundo, the American and Spanish authorities have found evidence of tax fraud from these two friendly games in South America.
Organised by The Lionel Messi Foundation, which was set up by his father Jorge Messi, the friendly games were supposed to benefit children around the world.
The matches may have been funded by a Mexican drug cartel, thus making them part of a possible money laundering scheme involving drug trafficking.
It is unclear whether Jorge Messi had any knowledge about his associates.
