Romano says that Chelsea want a young defender, but one with experience at the same time.
Here I’ve had a look at 5 potential options that fit the bill.
Jose Gimenez (25) Atletico Madrid –
He reportedly has a release clause of around £100 million, Chelsea obviously won’t be interested in paying that much. But Gimenez certainly fits the criteria mentioned and he has been scouted by Chelsea for some time.
Dayot Upamecano (22) RB Leipzig –
Only just turning 22, Upamecano is at the younger age of the scale but he still has decent experience already and he could be an option.
As well as Gimenez, he has been strongly linked with Chelsea in recent seasons, so it wouldn’t surprise me to see Chelsea in contention for him again in the summer.
Jules Kounde (22) Sevilla –
Another young player who has only just hit 22, but he also has good experience playing in Ligue 1 and La Liga.
Kounde is a name that is beginning to be mentioned more and more and the 6 foot French under-21 international is attracting interest from many top clubs.
Merih Demiral (22) Juventus –
It’s hard to believe that Demiral is still just 22 when you look at his physical stature standing at 6 foot 3in tall, the maturity he plays the game with, and the fact he has been capped for Turkey 16 times already.
The Juventus centre back comes with good experience and could be a good option for Chelsea.
Matthijs de Ligt (21) Juventus –
Perhaps more of an outside bet due to only just signing a big money 5-year contract at Juventus, but nothing is impossible in football and de Ligt is one of the best young defenders in the game.
His age fools nobody, and he has already got bags of experience and influence playing for Ajax, Holland, and Juventus.
