For volunteer positions ABA only considers attorneys with a minimum of five years relevant experience, high level of energy and initiative, strong interpersonal skills, and demonstrated legal expertise in the substantive area of the position. International experience and foreign language skills are preferred, but not required. All participants over 2 months receive a generous support package that covers travel, housing, general living, and business expenses. In-country foreign language training, medical evacuation insurance and reimbursement for medical insurance premiums are also included.

Georgia is in the process of a comprehensive reform of its education system, including legal education. CEELI has been requested to offer assistance with the following: curriculum development and teaching methodologies. The legal specialist would be expected to work with teams of administrators and professors from 2-3 law schools providing ongoing training on the process of curriculum development and then mentoring the process. The legal specialist would also work with 2-3 small groups of teachers to provide intensive training on basic skills (interactive and alternative teaching methodologies, defining course goals and objectives, developing a syllabus, preparing course materials, incorporating practical skills training, evaluation methods). Additional programs would include: technical assistance for drafting/revising existing higher education legislation, development of legal clinics and oversight of CEELI's ongoing Street Law Program. Must have teaching experience, including skills training and preferably clinical teaching as well. Experience leading a curriculum development project and/or providing training on teaching methodologies desired. Experience on international legal education reform projects would be helpful.

Specialist would work with team of law school administrators, professors and attorneys to develop accreditation standards and process. Serve as consultant for initial round of accreditations as well as developing US study tour for the assessment team. Must have experience with law school accreditation.

Director, American Bar Association Center for Rule of Law InitiativesThe American Bar Association seeks to fill a newly created Director position to lead, manage and oversee its international rule of law programs. Within the ABA, the Center for Rule of Law Initiatives is responsible for the Association’s work in advancing the rule of law throughout the world, including the work of the Central European and Eurasian Law Initiative (ABA/CEELI), the Asia Law Initiative, the Africa Law Initiative, and the Latin America and Caribbean Law Initiative (ABA/LALIC). The Center’s programs operate in over 30 countries and represent one of the fastest growing components of the ABA’s work.
Responsibilities: The Director will work closely with the Center staff in the U.S. and abroad, as well as ABA leadership, to establish programmatic goals and priorities and position the ABA as the leading provider of technical legal assistance, advocacy, and scholarship on the rule of law. The Director will oversee program development and implementation in more than 30 countries, supervise a domestic staff of over 70 and international staff of more than 300, and manage a grant portfolio in excess of $30 million a year. He or she will interact frequently with, among others, high level foreign and U.S. government officials based in the U.S. and abroad, existing and potential funders, and leading reformers in host countries, many of whom are in the non-governmental sector. The Director will also work to formally consolidate ABA rule of law initiatives that have heretofore been distinct but collaborative units.
Qualifications: Applicant should have at least ten years of experience in international development, preferably in the rule of law or democracy promotion. This should include significant experience as a high level manager in the government or private or non-profit international development sector. An advanced degree in law, international affairs, public policy, or business is required. The applicant must possess strong organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, and come with a proven track record of leadership in their respective field. Significant publications in the rule of law or related fields are preferred.
Salary: Salary is based on experience and is very competitive within the NGO international development community.

Finance and Recruitment Administrative AssistantABA/CEELI seeks an administrative assistant for its Department of Administration and Finance to provide day to day assistance to the recruitment and finance staff. Specific responsibilities for finance include: processing, coding and filing invoices, entering information into the ABA’s internet based procurement system, maintain accounts payable files, processing expense reports, serve as a vendor contact person, and process payment requests for overseas consultants and volunteer attorneys. Specific responsibilities for recruitment include processing all incoming applications, keeping applicants appraised of their status, maintain digital and paper files for all positions, conduct international and domestic bar, background and reference checks, coordinate interview process, draft and circulate applicant biographical information to Washington DC and overseas program staff, update tracking information and manage databases.
