The dissolution of EY Law in 2005 gave birth to the country’s two leading law firms: DLA Piper Gvinadze & Partners LP and BGI Legal .
BGI Legal was established by two of the three EY Law partners – Zaza Bibilashvili and the dual Georgia and New York-qualified Lasha Gogiberidze, who is a ‘fine transactional lawyer’. Its position as the country’s leading domestic firm makes it well placed as a referral partner to international firms without a presence in the country, with it enjoying close relationships with Baker & McKenzie LLP , White & Case LLP , Linklaters LLP and Norton Rose LLP . The firm’s partnership was trimmed to three following Levan Bakhutashvili’s move to take up a role as general counsel of Frontera Eastern Georgia, although its continued growth saw total headcount swell to over 20 lawyers. Recent highlights include winning a rare competitive tender to advise Millennium Challenge Georgia Fund on its $295.3m infrastructure and environment funding program, while it advised regular client the Government of Georgia on a $100m infrastructure development project and handled a number of issues for British American Tobacco. Clients believe the ‘well connected’ firm, which also includes reputed litigator and criminal defence attorney Georgi Kavlashvili, to possess ‘the best lawyers in Georgia’. First-time instructions were won from Citigroup and JPMorgan.
Nick Gvinadze, the former head of EY Law, joined Ted Jonas to set up DLA Piper Gvinadze & Partners LP . It has also continued to expand, hiring an additional eight lawyers in 2007, with Sidorov Khokhlov Uskov’s founding and name partner Ivan Khokhlov joining as of counsel to help strengthen the firm’s cross-border transactional and litigation practice. The firm is perhaps best known for advising Georgian issuers on debt and equity offerings, recently acting for the Bank of Georgia on both its $200m offering of notes on the London Stock Exchange and its $160m IPO. Other highlights include advice to EBRD on its joint purchase with Société Générale of a majority stake in Bank Republic. It continued also to advise BP Georgia – one of the firm’s key clients – on its three oil and gas pipeline projects transiting the country. The firm now has resident English-law expertise following the recruitment of finance associate Claire Titcomb from CMS Cameron McKenna LLP’s London office.
BLC (Professional Legal Services) continues to ‘grow impressively’, having made ‘good progress’ in the last year with a number of worthy hires. The firm, which works closely with Slaughter and May , also has an office in Batumi. Director Ketti Kvartskhava is recommended.
Begiashvili & Co. Limited’s name partner Giorgi Begiashvili is a well-regarded litigator.
A five-partner, full-service firm founded in 1996, Mgaloblishvili, Kipiani, Dzidziguri Law Firm’s main area of strength is finance, with the firm being EBRD’s Georgian counsel of choice. Irakli Mgaloblishvili, David Dzidziguri and Victor Kipiani are all recommended, while Archil Kbilashvili is a renowned litigator.
This year sees the entrance of two new firms to the rankings, with Amirashvili, Gogishvili & Shengelia, G.P. impressing on corporate and disputes, and clients describing Pataria and Partners as ‘surprisingly good’.
