being prepared in Jordan
BEIRUT - Syrian President Bashar al-Assad said that a rebel force was being formed in neighboring Jordan to launch an offensive in southern Syria’s Daraa as well as in the outskirts of the capital Damascus, Al-Joumhouriya newspaper reported Friday.
“A [rebel] army composed of 20,000 soldiers is being prepared in Jordan under international and regional supervision," Assad told a delegation of Lebanese March 8 politicians on Monday.
"This army might attack Daraa and try to advance in order to make up for the [opposition’s] losses in Damascus’ outskirts and to re-encircle the capital."
Press reports have emerged in recent weeks that Saudi Arabia was preparing to set up a new “national rebel force” based on the Jaysh al-Islam rebel coalition operating in the Damascus area.
The Guardian reported on November 7 that Riyadh has been pressuring Jordan to open up its territory as a strategic rearguard for providing weapons to rebels in Syria.
The newly formed rebel army would “try to retaliate to the [regime’s] Qalamoun offensive and its progress in Aleppo,” Assad reportedly told his visitors.
“This is being taken very seriously by the Syrian leadership, which is preparing itself very well to face it.”
The Syrian regime on Friday launched an offensive against rebels in the town of Qara in the mountainous Qalamoun region that lies along the border with Lebanon, sparking fears of a spillover of the conflict into Lebanon.
