Don’t Get Even
Healing the nation likely requires a diplomatic and moderate approach. In 1974, when President Gerald Ford pardoned Richard Nixon, it was a wise decision to allow the country to move forward rather than stew in toxic partisanship. Similarly, Mr. Biden should quickly move to dissuade congressional Democrats from investigating President Trump after he leaves office. No healing can begin if the side in power is focused on settling scores.
Next, Mr. Biden shouldn’t seek to undo all the policies of the previous administration or force through polarizing legislation like the Green New Deal on a slim margin of votes. This would only strain an already fractured nation. Legislation to repair the nation’s infrastructure or help small businesses hit by the pandemic would offer a bipartisan route to normalcy in Washington.

Stand Up for America
All people and ideas should be welcome in America. For that to be more than an aspiration, Joe Biden needs to make it clear to his supporters that holding beliefs different from their own doesn’t make a fellow American their enemy. He must emphasize that America isn’t this awful place flush with “systemic racism”; that hard work and personal responsibility still go a long way in this country, no matter your background.
Denouncing the radical ideas that have tainted our educational institutions over the past 10 to 15 years, and now are leaking into the corporate world, would allow for a renewed appreciation of the fact that there are good people on both sides of the argument. By returning to the core U.S. values, Mr. Biden can help lower the temperature of our national debate.

Defend the Rights and Interests of Others
In an ironic twist, the burden of “making America great again” now falls on Joe Biden’s shoulders. There are a few things the next president can do to unify the country.
First, speak out against cancel culture. Voters on both sides need to feel they have space to express their viewpoints without being fired or harassed by the online mob. Taking a strong stance against this kind of aggressive behavior would earn Mr. Biden the respect of many Americans who didn’t vote for him.
Second, delegate as much decision making as possible to the states. America’s winner-take-all politics, in which everything from marriage to health care is decided in Washington, has been incredibly polarizing. North Dakota has different needs and wants from California; letting each forge its own path would stop every battle for federal power from becoming the end of the world, in which both sides can justify increasingly extreme measures to ward off defeat.
Third, Mr. Biden can appoint some Republicans to his cabinet, signaling that he will listen to others and that he cares to understand their views. I don’t envy Mr. Biden’s responsibility, but I am hopeful for a brighter, more unified America.
