-----------------------> The European Association of Development Research and Training Institutes (EADI) announces the 2006 prize for excellence in
development research. The prize, worth €1 000, will be awarded for
an essay on an issue of development studies in any field of the
social sciences submitted and written by a postgraduate student from
an EADI member country (ჩვენი ქვეყანაც გაწევრიანებულია).
Entries for the EADI Prize for Development Studies should be essays
of between 5 000 and 7 000 words submitted double line-spaced in 11-
point type. Each entry should be accompanied by a two-hundred-word
abstract and a CV. Subjects may be chosen from any field of development studies, but contestants are asked to bear in mind that their work will be
subject to scrutiny by one of the EADI Working Groups prior to being
sent on to the jury. Entries coherent with Working Group themes
will, therefore, clearly enjoy an advantage. A list of the Working
Groups can be found on the Association's web site.
All entries for the EADI Prize for Development Studies should reach
the Association's offices in Bonn no later than 31 May 2006 by e-
mail. The Jury for the 2006 EADI Prize for Development Studies will make its decision known in September 2006. The prize winner will be
invited to the Association's Directors' Meeting in Brighton (2 – 3
November 2006) where the award ceremony will take place. Both the
winning entry and other high quality entries will be considered for
publication in the European Journal of Development Research.

Development studies is the academic discipline which addresses issues of concern to developing nations.
The emergence of development studies as an academic discipline in the second half of the twentieth century is in large part due to increasing concern about economic prospects for the third world after decolonisation. While it originally emerged as a branch of economics, development economics, it has become an increasingly inter- and multi-disciplinary subject, encompassing politics, sociology, geography, social anthropology and international relations.
Development studies is offered as a specialised Master's degree in a number of universities, and, less commonly, as an undergraduate degree.
Students of development studies often choose careers in international organisations such as United Nations, non-governmental organisations, the World Bank, and research centres.
