In 1990 I experienced my most emotional opera experience ever, when
the whole Ensemble of Georgian National Opera came from Tbilisi to
the German town of Duisburg for a series of guest performances (6
performances of 4 operas and a gala concert in 10 days). My friend
and I had tickets for the first evening which was a performance of
Prokofiev's "The Fiery Angel". We were so enthusiastic already
during the intermission that we went to the ticket shop to buy
tickets for all other six performances, only to find out that most
of the other people in the public had had the same idea. Anyway, we
were lucky enough to get tickets for all seven performances. During
the next week the public became something like a big family. We all
fell in love with the artists, the music, the atmosphere, and when
in the gala concert on a Sunday morning the whole ensemble presented
excerpts from Prokofiev's "War and Peace" in the first part, and
excerpts from Georgian operas in the second part of the concert, the
emotion exploded in the house. When the ensemble ended the concert
with a hymn to their home country, "Tschemokargo Kwerana", which is
a hymn to freedom and peace and which was more or less forbidden in
Georgia at that time, the emotion of the public and the artists as
well broke all rules. One could see people in the public embrace
each other, everyone had tears in the eyes, and the same happened on
stage. And after the concert most people went to the stage entrance
to greet, embrace and kiss the artists. And when some days and three
performances later the ensemble went to the railway station to
return home, lots of people escorted them on their way. I have never
before and never again experienced such a deep friendship and
heartfelt love between an complete opera ensemble and its audience,
and even today, after 16 years, I can't help but get tears in my
eyes when I am listening to this concert.
By the way, part of the ensemble were two young singers from Georgia
who in the meantime have become international opera stars: Iano
Alibegashvili, who is well known today under the name of Iano Tamar,
and Lado Atanelishvili, known today as Lado Ataneli.
