Brzezinski Russia: "We are in the Cold War"
An interview by Sebastian Fischer and Holger Stark, Washington
Former presidential adviser Brzezinski: "Foreign Political pressure is stronger domestically noticeably"
Former presidential adviser Brzezinski: "Foreign Political pressure is strongerdomestically noticeably"
The former national security adviser to US President Carter calls for weapons supplies to Ukraine and Putin threatens war if Russia invaded the Baltic States. A proposed solution to the crisis has Zbigniew Brzezinski also.
In an interview with SPIEGEL ONLINE, Zbigniew Brzezinski, 1977 to 1981 National Security Advisor of the Democratic US president Jimmy Carter, about the new Cold War. The 87-year-old now works at the think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) in Washington. There Brzezinski also receives, he flips the mirror and says that he can translate the most important articles on a regular basis.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Mr. Brzezinski, currently we see the beginnings of a new Cold War between Russia and the US?
Brzezinski: We have long been in the Cold War. Fortunately, it is also unlikely that it is a hot conflict.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: The last Cold War lasted more than four decades. Will it be similar to last time long?
Brzezinski: I do not believe that things are moving much faster.Foreign Political pressure is stronger domestically felt today. Thus, if Ukraine does not break down, then the pressure will force Russia's leaders at home to look for alternatives. Putin is hopefully so clever, better to act sooner rather than later.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Is he as smart?
Brzezinski: Hard to say. He has definitely over instinctive shrewdness, he has great finesse. I just wonder why he almost willfully 40 million people in a neighboring country applies against him. The Ukrainians had indeed until recently no hostile feelings towards Russia.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you think it right that the United States wants to deploy and heavy military equipment to Eastern Europe to the Baltic States?
Brzezinski: find it right to send troops and weapons in a sovereign country and to break a limited war in a part of that State from the fence, after having already torn a larger portion per se?
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You mean Putin's actions in Ukraine.
Brzezinski: You must always look at both sides. This is about action and reaction. I do not want war, but I'm not prepared to be intimidated by the assertion that we provoke a war with a symmetrical response. On the contrary, we do not react, this is the most likely way to bring about a war.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Does not really such an upgrade of the West Putin's anti-Western Propanda in their hands?
Brzezinski: Are you saying that NATO does not have the right to station troops on the territory of its Member States, when looming dangers in the immediate vicinity?
SPIEGEL ONLINE: The question was whether this is a wise decision because it allows Putin to score points with the Russian population.
Brzezinski: This argument would have been the reluctance to Hitler's invasion of Sudetenland and the "annexation" of Austria to justify.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: You compare Putin with Hitler?
Brzezinski: There are similarities and differences. Hitler, for example, was never really interested in getting rich. Putin does. Perhaps this life perspective is able to moderate his political passions something.Especially dangerous is that Putin is a player.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: Let's say Putin could Russian soldiers invaded the Baltic states. Would NATO fight?
Brzezinski: Of course. But NATO is still there, is not it? If we tell everybody in the world, we would not mean what we say and we would not do anything if we something is done, then you can also hang a sign on your house in the summer: "We are gone, the doors are not closed. "Do you think that a smart security strategy?
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Recently, a survey revealed that 58 percent of Germans want the allies do not come in the case of a military conflict between Russia and a neighboring NATO country to help would.
Brzezinski: I've seen. What percentage of Germans would say, then, that the United States you should not come to the aid, Germany would be attacked?
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Probably the vast majority would say: Help us.
Brzezinski: That's right. Circumstances change, human nature changes. Just take a look at the Lithuanians, this small nation. Who have just declared that they will defend themselves. Point. That should embarrass Germany. In fact, I am convinced that the Germans would fight. Chancellor Merkel would be willing to fight and the opposition it would be.

SPIEGEL ONLINE: In Ukraine conflict President Obama Merkel has left the leadership. A good decision?
Brzezinski: Merkel makes an extremely good job. And Obama has other problems, such as in the Middle East.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: From Merkel's perspective weapons supplies to Ukraine are wrong because there is no military solution to this conflict. What do you say?
Brzezinski: It would be useful to Ukraine to supply defensive weapons to defend the big cities, armor-piercing weapons or mortar around. Because we should raise the price of Russian use of force. Take a city whose population is determined to defend, which is extremely costly.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: Do you see a way out of this conflict beyond a further escalation?
Brzezinski: It takes a similar arrangement as that between Russia and Finland, which ensures stability and peace for decades. Ukraine should have the right to choose freely their political identity and to more closely bind to Europe. At the same time Russia needs to be assured that Ukraine will not be included in NATO. This is the solution formula.
SPIEGEL ONLINE: In recent years we have learned a lot about the NSA. Has the NSA intercepted during your time as national security adviser Chancellor Helmut Schmidt?
Brzezinski: I have a sense of responsibility towards my earlier position and therefore I will not discuss here.
