Finally, those rejoicing at his departure have lost sight of what their football club represents. For all United’s success, it is the ability to bring players through from the academy to first team that is the most long-standing. On this basis, Tom Cleverley is a great success who, in different circumstances, could have had a career as a squad player at United for a long time, following the likes of O’Shea, Brown, Fletcher etc in recent years – players who have been key to the success that supporters demand. As it stands, he has ironically followed the same United career path as Darron Gibson, the man whose place in the squad he took; promising youngster that the fans want to see involved, turned scapegoat, forced off social media by said fans and whose exit is widely celebrated. A player who has been at the club for fourteen years deserves better than that

Man Utd have had a youth graduate in every match day squad dating all the way back to the 1930s.

Despite the excitement generated by the raft of newcomers - and despite him not being every United fan’s cup of tea - the sale of Danny Welbeck in particular seems to signal the dawn of a new era that not everybody is comfortable with, especially the Class of ‘92 youth team manager and mentor Eric Harrison.
“I am very concerned to be honest,” Harrison told M.E.N. Sport.
“I cannot believe Danny Welbeck has gone. Okay he might not have been a prolific goalscorer but his work rate and effort was undeniable.
“There was a place for him and I am not too pleased he’s gone to Arsenal. It is sending out the wrong message when local home grown players like that are leaving.
“It is the same with Tom Lawrence. He is going to a good club at Leicester City and will grow and develop there and will be a very good first-team player for them but I think he could have played in United’s first team.
“Losing players who have been part of the club since they were young kids means you are losing the heart and soul of the club. That’s what the Class of ‘92 were for instance. They were the core and you need that at the centre of your squad. You need players who have been brought up in the United family and atmosphere. It is special.
“I watch the Under-18s and the Under-21s and there is some outstanding talent there. You also have top professional coaches who do a very, very good job in the Academy and will continue to do so. Young players will always want to come to United but they also have to see that there is a road to the first team.
“At the moment the message to them isn’t what it used to be. I don’t think it has gone forever, I certainly hope not. But I have to say I am worried. United cannot afford to lose their soul.”
so fucking true
