http://www.pr-inside.com/women-s-rights-ad...for-r821802.htmGeorgian tanks fired into the basements where women and children huddled for safety," said Lira Tskhovrebova, the founder of the Association of South Ossetian Women for Democracy and Human Rights. "Many of those who survived are homeless and left with nothing, even as they mourn family and neighbors killed by the Georgian military."
"I hid for three nights with my family and neighbors, certain we would be killed. Georgian President Mikheil Saakashvili keeps telling lies to the U.N. and to the world media, but he can't change the fact that his military deliberately killed women and children and destroyed hundreds of homes, schools and hospitals."
Tskhovrebova appealed for Americans and Europeans to visit www.helpossetianow.org, which provides a link to the International Red Cross, one of the organizations helping victims of the attack. She also asked the Georgian, Russian and South Ossetian governments to give humanitarian groups free access to the war-torn region so they can deliver badly-needed assistance and supplies.
Tskhovrebova, who has worked on women's issues for over a decade, said Americans may feel a special responsibility to help her people once they understand that the U.S. government trained and equipped the Georgian military that attacked her country.
"Americans haven't been told the truth about what happened," she said. "Americans don't understand that Ossetians are an independent, Christian Orthodox people with a deep history and that they were the victims of a premeditated and ruthless attack by a powerful military force."
"Georgia used tanks, Grad rockets and cluster bombs against civilians," she said. "I know that Americans are a generous people and will sympathize with what happened to Ossetians when they learn the truth."
Tskhovrebova said that Ossetia had been victims of both the brutal attack by the Georgian military, and also by the international media, which ignored Ossetian suffering and accepted Georgian government propaganda claiming Georgia was victimized by Russia.
"We've heard from Saakashvili. We've heard from American politicians. We've heard from Russian leaders. And we've heard endlessly from 'experts' on the Cold War," she said.
"The world has heard from everyone it seems, except the real victims of the Georgian attack. The first thing the Georgians did when they attacked was destroy our power grid, communications and government buildings. We have been without a voice, even though we were the people dying and suffering."
Tskhovrebova said she came forward after she realized that Georgian public relations and lobbying groups were spreading false stories about the August 7 attack and that, as a result, most journalists continue to report the Georgian distortions as fact. "We've been grieving," she said. "Now it's time to do what we can to help the people of Ossetia and get out the truth."
She said that hundreds of dwellings in and around the South Ossetian capital of Tskhinvali were bombed, shelled or burned by Georgian troops.
"We have immediate needs for clothing and shelter, as well as longer term for the reconstruction of homes and lives as the winter approaches," she said. "I can't change the politicians or media experts, but at least I can appeal for the truth and for the world to help the suffering people of Ossetia with humanitarian assistance."
