Bob Marley wrote beautiful, deep and wise lyrics, and I have plenty of respect for his great soul. Problem is, I never really could get into reggae.
Which is why this album is such a brilliant idea: take Marley’s music and set them to the laid-back, Brazilian sounds of electro-bossa. You get all the depth of the lyrics, backed up by light and breezy pool party beats.
Now you may think that couldn’t possibly strengthen Bob’s music, but nothing can ever weaken the lyrics. This is a brave combination, no doubt, but not an impossible one.
The album features all the classic tracks, such as 'No Woman No Cry', 'Stir It Up', 'One Love', 'Sun Is Shining' and 'Redemption Song', all performed in sensual female vocals.
Of course, Bob’s music is about revolution and revolt, so how can such a laid-back voice deliver that message? Thing is, Bob Marley was passionate and a pacifist — perfect match. The clear female voice gives this music a new meaning. So give it a listen, you may find yourself surprised.
And while nothing will ever compare to the original, this package appeals because it means I can do highlights and cocktails instead of dreadlocks and marijuana — and still listen to Bob’s visionary hymns in the background.
Together with 'Bossa 'n Stones' this project signifies an exciting trend in music. I’m not convinced that Bob would approve, but there’s no doubt that this album catapults his legacy into the future.
Marley once said of his own songs: "This music will live on and on and on and on…" but would he ever have imagined it would be in such a revolutionary way?[/color] [/center]
