Grosso 12 (I), Iaquinta 39 (I)
Stadio Olimpico, Turin Italy's new diamond midfield did the trick, as Fabio Grosso and Vincenzo Iaquinta sealed an impressive 2-0 win over Bulgaria. However, Fabio Cannavaro will be suspended for the trip to Ireland.
Fittingly for a game played in Turin, there were seven Juventus players in the starting XI with numerous changes from the side that beat Georgia 2-0 in Tbilisi last week thanks to two Kakha Kaladze own goals. Andrea Pirlo was moved to a more advanced role in the diamond midfield, changing tactics too, while Daniele De Rossi returned from a ban. Newcomers were Fabio Grosso, Claudio Marchisio and Alberto Gilardino.
Bulgaria were still in the running for both the leadership of Group 8 and the second place valid for a play-off, as they were unbeaten with two wins and five draws. By winning this game, Italy would be in a very strong position to qualify regardless of the trip to Ireland. Giovanni Trapattoni and assistant Marco Tardelli were in the stands.
Seven minutes in Pirlo spread the play for Grosso down the left and his cross flashed across the face of goal with Gila at full stretch missing it by inches. Dimitar Ivankov timed his run off the line perfectly to pluck a dangerous ball off the head of Iaquinta.
It was Grosso who broke the deadlock with a wonderfully well-worked goal in his new stadium. The full-back combined with Pirlo, just as they had in the World Cup 2006. Pirlo chipped the ball over the defence with a first-touch to find Grosso's left-foot volley in off the underside of the bar.
This was the first goal Italian players had scored since the Confederations Cup, having gone four games without hitting the back of the net other than through own goals.
It was so nearly 2-0 moments later, as down the right flank Gianluca Zambrotta pulled back a perfect pass for Iaquinta, but the Juventus striker scuffed his angled drive and allowed Stanislav Manolev to perform a goalline clearance.
Dimitar Rangelov wasted two chances with a weak header and a pass straight to Buffon from the counter, while Zambrotta and Iaquinta blasted hopeful efforts over.
However, on 25 minutes Buffon required an incredible save! A corner found Stilian Petrov's volley at the near post from six yards, but the goalkeeper flew to the very top corner to punch it out, perhaps withat least some of the ball crossing the line.
De Rossi turned wide from a free kick and Iaquinta nodded a Pirlo set play over the bar, but Petrov again drilled inches wide from the edge of the box. De Rossi's snapshot took a deflection to loop over and from the corner Iaquinta's header whistled past the far post.
Italy doubled their advantage on 39 minutes with another well-worked team goal. Iaquinta's dummy allowed the Grosso pass through for Gilardino, who exchanged double passes to carve the Bulgarian defence apart and the Juve star placed an angled drive into the far corner with the inside of his foot. It was his fifth goal for the Azzurri.
Mauro Camoranesi cheekily flicked up the ball off his heel to commit a defender, but the shot was too close to the goalkeeper.
After the break the Bulgarian goalkeeper dealt with a backpass poorly and Camoranesi's follow-up was charged down. Giuseppe Rossi replaced Gilardino and immediately tested Ivankov from distance. Bulgaria made a double substitution with Blagoy Georgiev and Parma striker Valeri Bojinov replacing Rangelov and Martin Petrov.
Georgiev had a great chance with practically his first touch, a free kick squirming through everyone to find Buffon's forearm before it could curl in at the far post.
Marchisio almost scored in his hometown game, running into space on to a marvellous Camoranesi pass over the top, but the finish was neither a cross nor a shot and whistled wide.
Manchester United striker Dimitar Berbatov was overall very quiet, but fired one effort over from outside the box. Berbatov also tried to score with a backheel, but he was in an offside position and Buffon blocked it anyway.
Simone Pepe of Udinese came on for Marchisio, while Valeri Domovchiyski replaced Yankov.
There was bad news when Fabio Cannavaro was booked for a crucial foul to stop Bojinov's counter and the captain will be suspended for the trip to Ireland. Georgiev curled the free kick wide of the near post and aimed another long-range snapshot over the bar.
A triple defensive error from De Rossi, Camoranesi and Chiellini gave Bojinov free reign, but the former Manchester City striker only clipped the outside of the upright.
Rossi went close on 81 minutes when his angled drive forced Ivankov to turn it out for a corner at the near post. Gaetano D'Agostino replaced Iaquinta late on.
Camoranesi set up a great counter in stoppages for Pirlo, but the Milan man was visibly tired and stumbled on top of the ball in the D.

De Rossi praises Lippi tactics Wednesday 9 September, 2009
Daniele De Rossi hailed Marcello Lippi’s tactical nous for proving he can play together with Andrea Pirlo.
“I think we can play well together and always have done, even when critics thought it was impossible,” said the Roma man.
“Of course we need to work on it and gel, but the fear is that the next game that isn’t so impressive, the papers will bring out the old controversy again.”
Pirlo played at the head of a diamond midfield, effectively returning to the trequartista role he had in the Under-21 side.
“It doesn’t change all that much, as we split the tasks. I know what I have to do and am pleased to work hard for a champion like him, tending to help the defenders a little more so he can focus on the passes for attack.”
There were nine World Cup winners in the starting XI for the 2-0 victory over Bulgaria, but De Rossi denies there is an old guard monopoly.
“I think Lippi puts faith in those who are the best for this occasion, not whether they were in Berlin or not. After all, he played [Claudio] Marchisio from the start, a very good young player who is settling in quickly.”
The goals from Fabio Grosso and Vincenzo Iaquinta were the first from Italy players since the Confederations Cup, as they fired blanks for four games, not including Kakha Kaladze’s own goals.
“I always evаluate the matches based on what the players do as a unit, so it’s unfair to blame strikers when there are no goals or the defence when we concede.
“Between Saturday’s game and tonight’s we proved once again that we have the best goalkeeper in the world. Even when the defence is beaten, [Gigi Buffon] is there to clean up the danger.”
It is a far cry from the dismal performance in the Confederations Cup over the summer, when the Azzurri finished bottom of their group.
“I think we were motivated, it was mainly a physical thing and a lack of form in general compared to our opponents. It’s better that it happened then rather than in 2010.”

Iaquinta's second South Africa Wednesday 9 September, 2009
Vincenzo Iaquinta is looking forward to a very different Italy in South Africa from the one that entered the Confederations Cup.
“Now we have turned the page,” he said of the summer debacle. “We know we did badly in South Africa, but we have to move past that and remember we are very close to defending our title in the World Cup.”
The Azzurri need just one more point to qualify after beating Bulgaria 2-0 with goals from Fabio Grosso and Iaquinta.
“When I score goals I tend to go a bit crazy! I was happy with the performance, especially in the first half, but it’s only to be expected that we’d tire in the long run and prefer to control the tempo.
“The Coach tried to make changes and brought in some talented youngsters who are settling in well. Now we have this important result and will try to win in Ireland too.”
The game was played in Turin with seven Juventus stars in the starting XI, but an eighth could be added in 2010, as Amauri was in the stands.
“Amauri is waiting for the passport that should arrive soon, but there is no need to focus on him now. The Coach will make the decision when the time comes.
“There are so many great strikers in the Nazionale and we all get along, there is no problem in pairing any duo together.”

Cannavaro climbs off 'scrapheap' Wednesday 9 September, 2009
Fabio Cannavaro saw the win over Bulgaria as an answer to the critics “who say we belong on the scrapheap.”
The 2-0 victory has practically secured Italy's place in South Africa with a four-point lead over the Republic of Ireland.
“This was a big step forward. It was important to give a sign we were a team and united again, which is what we did tonight,” said the captain.
“We passed the ball around well and entertained the crowd, especially in the first half, while we controlled the tempo in the second.”
The goals came from two of the 2006 veterans, Fabio Grosso and Vincenzo Iaquinta, while there were nine World Cup winners in the starting XI.
“If we became World Champions the we must've done something good. It has been three years now that people have said we are old, past it and need to be put on the scrapheap. Tonight we proved that when we're in decent shape, we are as good as ever.”
Andrea Pirlo played in a new trequartista position, completing a diamond midfield to support the strikers.
“We are talking about an extraordinary player who can make the difference in any area of the pitch. Tonight he went back to the role he had as a youngster and he did very well,” continued Cannavaro.
“[Marcello] Lippi's talent has always been in finding players who can work well to take advantage of the opposition's weaknesses, as we had seen from tapes that Bulgaria struggle to catch those between the lines.”
Giuseppe Rossi was tipped for greatness by the captain, but struggled in Georgia and only came on as a substitute in Turin.
“Of course youngsters are needed and we have to help them to grow quickly, as Italian football needs new faces too.
“Giuseppe is very strong and knows his quality. I like him a great deal, which is why I said he is one of the few who can give us that real step up in quality as a team.”
Cannavaro has also answered critics with his performance tonight, even if a booking means he will be suspended for the trip to Dublin on October 10.
“I think my last two seasons in Madrid were at a good level, I am back here and have done all the pre-season training. My 2006 form was remarkable, so getting back to even close that would be great!”

Gilardino enjoys Italy style Wednesday 9 September, 2009
Alberto Gilardino believes Italy can only truly shine when they play to their strengths – with the ball to feet.
“We played an excellent first half and tried to keep the ball low, so when we play to feet and pass it around quickly, we can really do damage,” he said after the 2-0 win over Bulgaria.
“The three points were important, but so was the performance to answer our critics and build confidence.”
The Azzurri had been criticised for their show in Tbilisi, where only a Kakha Kaladze brace of own goals handed them the points.
Gilardino was benched for that game, but started in Turin and played a part in both Fabio Grosso and Vincenzo Iaquinta’s goals.
One of the main changes against Bulgaria was the switch to a diamond midfield with Andrea Pirlo acting as trequartista.
“I have known Andrea for a long time and was lucky enough to work with him for the Under-21 side, Olympics team and Milan,” added Gilardino.
“He is extraordinary and can play in any area of the team, he was wonderful tonight.”
There are few homegrown alternatives to Pirlo, although Gila’s Fiorentina teammate Riccardo Montolivo has been suggested.
“Riccardo has everything he needs to be a part of the Nazionale now and in future. It’s up to him to show this season that he can impress and earn his place in the squad, as he too is very versatile and can make the difference all over the pitch.”
Amauri was in the stands and is in the process of receiving his Italian passport, although that might not happen until March 2010.
“We’ll see what happens in the next few weeks and months. I am not nervous, no, as we have a strong squad and are relaxed.
“There is competition for places, as there should be at international level, between the fresh blood and seasoned veterans.”

Lippi: 'We're nearly there now' Wednesday 9 September, 2009
Marcello Lippi believes that Italy are practically qualified for the World Cup after going four points clear of Ireland.
“With a draw in Dublin we are mathematically qualified. If we should lose, then we have a home game with Cyprus three days later to finish the job,” said the Coach.
There are only two games left in Group 8 and the Azzurri lead with 20 points to Ireland's 16 thanks to tonight's 2-0 victory over Bulgaria.
Lippi adopted a new diamond midfield formation with seven Juventus players in the starting XI.
“The first half was entertaining and I am happy for the lads, as people try to make them out to be hopeless. They have quality both in terms of commitment and technique.
“We scored two fine goals and could have had four or five. We know that at this time of the season we are never on top form, so we controlled the game after the break and that was wise.”
Fabio Grosso and Vincenzo Iaquinta were both members of the squad that lifted the 2006 World Cup and have effectively allowed Italy to defend that title in South Africa with tonight's goals.
Elsewhere in the group, Cyprus held Montenegro to a 1-1 draw.
