Football's rule-makers have decided to use the additional assistant referees system in next season's Champions League.
The International Football Association Board ruled that, after deeming the experimental use of two extra officials for Europa League matches last term, the trial will be extended to Europe's premier club competition in time for the coming campaign and continue until 2012.
In addition, the IFAB also confirmed that the issue of goal-line technology would be discussed at a meeting in October.
The system involves putting officials behind the goal-line at both ends of the pitch in order to assist the referee with decisions regarding the ball crossing the line and fouls and incidents inside the penalty area.
The decision was ratified at Wednesday's meeting of the IFAB technical sub-committee in Cardiff.
The decision to widen the experiment also means that two additional referees assistants will also be used in the Asian Football Confederation President's Cup in September, the French League Cup, the UEFA Super Cup as well as domestic competitions in Brazil and Mexico.
However, no decision has been taken on the issue of goal-line technology, despite several incidents at the recent World Cup finals, including in a last-16 match between England and Germany in which England's Frank Lampard had a goal ruled out when his shot clearly bounced over the line after striking the crossbar.
"FIFA and the technical sub-committee confirmed that goal-line technology will be on the agenda of the next annual business meeting of the IFAB in October 2010," read a statement.
