Justin Luchford's Faversham Town tasted defeat for the first time this season against a solid looking Metropolitan Police side at The Shepherd Neame Stadium watched by a crowd of 110.
Luchford was forced into making changes from the team that won against Whitstable on Bank Holiday Monday, Danny Lye and Dale Skelton both nursing injuries whilst Shane Hamshare and Dan Larkin were both absent due to family commitments.
Further selection issues for Luchford arrived minutes before kick-off with first choice goalkeeper Rob French chipping a bone in his thumb during the pre-match warm up giving reserve keeper Giga Zulmatashvili an, unexpected first team debut.
Town started brightly in the opening 15 minutes having most of the possession but without creating any real chances.
The visitors had the first clear cut chance on goal after 17 minutes - Craig Brown's cross from the right falling to Neil Lampton whose well struck effort was acrobatically saved by Zulmatashvili who then reacted immediately to block Eddie Smith effort from close range as the home side struggled to clear the ball.
Further chances for both sides were thin on the ground for the remainder of the half Town's only chance of note saw Justin Ascheri's low driven effort deflected wide of the left hand upright whilst Zumatashvili drew further applause from the home crowd tipping James Field's long range effort over the bar.
The second 45 minutes saw the visitors display their dominance and experience, keeping the Lilywhites on the back foot for most of the half.
The deadlock was broken on 54 minutes with Town's defence failing to deal with Craig Brown's cross from the right which was headed home at the far post by Police left back Steve Noakes.
Faversham's bench reacted immediately bringing on Danny Hunt to replace Tommy Hill which saw the home side respond with shots on target from Ascheri and Jake Leberl neither of which really stretched Met Police keeper Mo Maan.
Town's resurgence was short lived and the visitors secured victory, and maintained their 100% start to the season, when Field burst into the Town area on 74 minutes to slot the ball home.
Richard Sinden and Steve O'Brien were brought on for the last 15 minutes but, despite forcing the visitors to defend Maan's clean sheet was never in doubt.
Met Police, early season title favourites, deserved their victory but were made to work for the points by a weakened Lilywhite side.
Umlauts deservedly collected the Man of the Match champagne following an impressive debut.
The Lilywhites are next in action this coming Tuesday evening as they travel to South-West London to face Whyteleafe - kick-off at 19:45.[B]
