INFO: Chinawoman is a solo recording artist from Toronto. Her sound can be traced to the exclusive Russian-only clubs of Toronto, where men in silk shirts croon tales of heartache over bossa nova synth, and to the ballet school where Chinawoman spent her youth a spectator of melodrama set to Chopin.
The music is 80’s, euro trash, low-fi. The vocal style: some say Barry Manilow (another Russian-Jew) though Chinawoman prefers Tom Jones. The result: an eighties nightclub with the innocence of the old world, a theatrical lightness that remains soulful and with purpose.
