Vakhtang G. Bochorishvili was born on 25.03.1924 in the family of a teacher of Russian language, in Giorgeti village, Lagodekhi region. His father had finished Stavropol Theological seminary, his mother was a housewife, a sister of a famous Georgian composer Kote Potskhverashvili (the author of a hymn of independent Georgia).
In 1940 year he successfully graduated from Telavi Secondary school N 1 and in the same year was enrolled in Tbilisi Theatrical Institute, Faculty of Production, which because of his illness he had to leave. Later (in 1943), after his recovering, he started to work in Telavi State Dramatic Theatre in a position of a technical producer. In December, 1943 as a result of participation in the Party examination of Young Producers he was awarded the II category producer degree and in 1944 August he was transferred to Tbilisi, to the Sh. Rustaveli State Theatre, to work in a position of a Head of company. Later he worked as a producer-assistant.
In 1945 (March), due to the change of his health for the worse he asked to be transferred to Sokhumi Georgian Dramatic Theatre, as a producer. He produced there only one play - “Khevisberi Gocha”. Soon he had to leave the Sokhumi Dramatic Theatre.
In 1945 he enrolled in Kharkov Medical Instituie, at the Medical-Hygienic Faculty, from which he graduated in 1951. By distribution he worked in a position of a Head of Infectious Department and taught in Medical Institute. In 1952 he turned to military work, he became the head of the dispensary N 94061. In 1954 he was transferred to the Tallin Sea Hospital N 85, in 1956-62 years he was working in Leningrad Military Medical Academy, as resident and later as a senior teacher. In 1962 he defended his Candidate of Sciences and in 1968 Doctor of Sciences thesis. In 1969 as a result of a competition he started to work in a position of the head of the Chair of Infectious Diseases, Institute of Professional Development of Physicians.
In the summer of 1970 year he was actively involved in fight and cessation of the epidemic of cholera. Later, in the same year he was assigned in a position of Minister of Health of Georgian Soviet Socialistic Republic (GSSR), which he left himself in 1973. Since 1973 he had been intensively working on the sepsis problem and on 7.07. 1979 he established the Antiseptic Center, which he had been supervising up to his death. In 1971 he was selected to be the Head of the Republic Scientific Society of Infectiologists.
In 1978 Tbilisi on the united scientific meeting of Institute of Professional Development of Physicians and Medical Institute V. Bochorishvili had a talk regarding to the:” Infectious Pathology as common clinical problem”, which was published.
In 1982 he was assigned as vice-chairman in the field of Cure of IV Central Board attached to the Ministry of Health. In 1985 he was awarded the title of GSSR Meritorious Worker and in the same year he together with his research group became GSSR Government Prize Laureate for the research work: ”The formation of not existing beforehand special medical assistance for infected with sepsis and arrangement of its application in the medical practice of GSSR”, which was realized in 1973-1983 years.
Vakhtang Bochorishvili was a founder of the new field in medical science – sepsisology. In this regard he had many lectures and seminars regarding to the pressing topical questions of sepsis in different republics and towns of FSU (Former Soviet Union). There was created thematic cycles on sepsis for physicians, teachers and professors. In 1988 Vakhtang Bochorishvili became a member of Russian Academy of Medical Sciences. In 1989 he became an academic of New York Academy of Sciences.
In 1997 he was chosen as a member of American-Georgian Academy of Surgery and Therapeutics Sciences. In 1999 he was a member of the Parliament of Georgia.
In 2002, April Vakhtang Bochorishvili was entered in the list of men of mark of American Biographical Institute. He is an author of more than 300 scientific works and papers. His scientific works regard to the various problems of infectious pathology, he is an author of the following monographs:
1. Quinsy and state of cardiovascular system– 1963, Leningrad.
2. The pathology of internals of the patients with quinsy and chronic tonsillitis – 1965, Leningrad
3. Cholera – 1972, Tbilisi
4. Pseudotuberculosis – 1972, Tbilisi
5. Sepsisology with the basic foundations of infectious pathology – 1988, Tbilisi
6. Thrombohemorrhagic syndrome -1989, Tbilisi
7. The main questions of sepsis pathogenesis in experiment - 1997, Tbilisi
8. Diphtheria – 2001, Tbilisi
Vakhtang Bochorishvili was decorated with Illarion Qartveli order for monograph. Four doctoral and twenty Ph.D thesises had been defended under his supervision.
Vakhtang Bochorishvili died on 11.09.2002. He was buried at the Didube public men pantheon.
