The following two methods are necessary: a. Visit the company address; b. Visit local authority that is responsible for company registration
Are there any resource online to inquiry for company registration information?
On nationwide level, there are not any official or commercial site offering service for nationwide online registration inquiry. On the provincial level, only 8 out of 31 official website of AIC(22 Provinces, 2 Autonomous Regions and 4 Centrally-Administered Municipalities, not include Taiwan, Hongkong and Macao), offer online information inquiry service. Among them, the AIC websites in Chongqing Centrally-Administered Municipality, Henan Province and Guizhou Province provide free online inquiry, the AIC websites in Liaoning Province, Guangdong Province, Inner Mongolia and Jiangxi Province provide online registration information inquiry service to paid members only, Jinlin Province allows users to inquiry by telephone(by dial 169166), that is only province that provide telephone inquiry. Company Verification Tips
1) Always send money to business account instead of personal account
Unlike other countries, China introduce strict regulation on company formation, so if we can verify a company is real, then it is relatively safe to trade with them. Every companies in China should have a business account or company account if they are real and legit. Company account is the most important indicator to judge whether a company is real or not.
Some may ask what is company account and what is personal account and what is the difference? Good question. I will give you an example to show you the difference.
If an account goes like this, it is a personal account:
Beneficiary name: Zhou Jianming(my name)
Bank name: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
Account No.: 35000********************
Swift Code:ICBKBJHLJ
And this is a company account:
Beneficiary name: Harbin Freedom Energy Sootblowing Co., Ltd (a company name)
Bank name: Industrial and Commercial Bank of China
Account No.:35000********************
Swift Code: ICBKBJHLJ
Just check if the beneficiary name is a person or a company, so that is pretty easy. All the companies should have a RMB company account, while those export-oriented company should have a multi-currency company account to receive foreign currencies. Export-oriented company means those companies who have applied and been approved the right of import and export.
There was one example, when a customer wanted to buy something from a company. If the company use personal account instead of RMB company account, then there is a chance that it might be a fake company. Actually many private company do use personal account to avoid tax. But in this case, I the supplier said that the tax was 30%, which seemed to be fake, because Normally the tax is about 4%, if you want a VAT invoice, they will add 17%.
2) Website disclose very important information
Dump a supplier if they don't have a website or email! Come on, we live in 21st century, we shouldn't trade with a company who we doubt is doing business and live in a cave.
So when we are given the website url of a supplier, it is important to check the information the website disclose, you should try to check the following:
a. Do they give a detailed address or they doesn't give an address at all? Is their address located at a residential area? Do they give an address in City A, but have the telephone No. in City B?
Don't do business with a "company" that won't disclose their address on their website, it is first not professional, but most importantly, very risky to trade with. I have been advising my customers to stay away with supplier that don't want to disclose their address.
An office in commercial building is required to format a company, it is a big minus to have one's office located in a residential area, briefly, if an address goes like this: Room 403, No.8 Building Harbin city, it should be a residential area, if the address goes like this: Room 403, Zhongrong International Building Harbin city, then it is a commercial buiding. The difference is the commercial buidling should have a name, while residential building normally have a Number for the building.
This morning I checked a "company" , they claimed they are a company, they don’t have a company name on the website, their address is in Wuhan City, but Telephone Number is in Beijing. When I called their Beijing number, I was told that they are wrong number. We could see that even for scammers, there are 2 types: professional scammer and loser scammer.
b. check if they have about us page, be extremely cautious to do business with those who even don't have a about us page to introduce themselves.
c. search their website url+scam, see what you get
(for example, in google:
Xaojuan scam
or:
www.xaojuan.com scam)
d. google give high ranking to website that have last for years, I also give credit to website and companies that has established for many years. Briefly you can tell that by checking how many searching results related to that website and company, the more the better, as which suggest that they are active in business for a period of time.
e. for a trade company or manufacturer, a website with both chinese version and english version seems more professional, that also means they have been doing business in domestic market. Interestingly, I have found that most scammer website only have english version. but business that only serve overseas customers should be excluded
Visit local Administration for Industry and Commerce(AIC) website
The most secured way to verify a China-based company is to visit the local administration of industry and commerce, check the company registration information of said company from local AIC with the information listed on their business license to see if they are the same.
You can find the following company information at local AIC: date of incorporation, address, legal representative, registered capital, contact information, business scope, business type, business term, annual inspection performance, etc.
Chinawhy offers inspection service in China (
http://www.chinawhy.net/Company.asp )(including local AIC visiting) for paid customers, However, we are happy to share some open company verification resources( regarding AIC visiting) with customers who are doing very small business and can't afford to pay for a proper company verification.
In a long run, China will build up a comprehensive company registration information inquiry system, but for now, we don't have a nationwide level official website offers such data inquiry service.
Some local AIC have set up website for users to check the basic information of a company found within their administrative area, I have checked whether these website are authentic by testing to check some local companies which I knew are legit, However, for many AIC website which offer online company information inquiry service, the results are not correct due to they haven't built up an complete online database of company registration information they possessed.
The following website of local AIC offers authentic company information inquiry function:
Shenzhen Administration for Industry and Commerce (http://www.szcredit.com.cn/)
Xiamen Administration for Industry and Commerce (http://www.xiamencredit.gov.cn/)
When you click into the website, you need to either input Company registration No. or Chinese company name, let me give you an example on how to check a Shenzhen-based company by using the website of Shenzhen Administration for Industry and Commerce.
I know "深圳市XX实业有限公司" is real and legit, so when I open www.szcredit.com.cn, I input the company name in "名称关键字或注册号或机构代码" this field, then click "查询", you will get here:
http://www.szcredit.com.cn/SZCredit/Query/...ryList.aspx?MC=[深圳市洪迪实业有限公司]&Type=0
You will find that this company is a Hongkong-funded enterprise and has one subsidiary company, you can also see the legal representative of this company, but if you want to inquiry more detailed information of this company, you will be charged. So in conclusion:
1)most AIC don't offer online company information inquiry service
2)among those AIC websites that offer online inquiry, many are not authentic due to database incompleteness.
3)Among the few AIC website that offer online inquiry function and have a complete database for accurate company information inquiry, most are paid, only a few are free. We are going to share with our fellow users if we found other free open resources for company verification.
How to verify Hongkong Offshore Company
I guess many of you have come across Hongkong-based companies that have address and contact info in mainland China only(mostly in Shenzhen or somewhere else in Guangdong Province), they are Hongkong-base offshore company.
The reason for people in southern China to set up companies in Hongkong mainly are: 1) Hongkong is tax heaven so many companies set up companies in Hongkong to avoid tax; 2) Hongkong have loose company registration regulation compared with mainland China so it is easy for many individual to set up a shell company there. The cost for setting up an offshore company in Hongkong is around RMB10000.
The danger for dealing with an offshore/shell company in Hongkong is that they don’t have a physical presence there in Hongkong, in that case, if any dispute arises from the transaction, you will have nobody/entity to make remedy against in Hongkong, meanwhile you are also not protected in mainland China as you are dealing with a company in Hongkong.
So how can I tell if a hongkong-based company is an offshore company or a real Hongkong company? Here are some clues:
1)call their telephone number in Hongkong to see if anyone answer it(be awared that the phone might be transferred to some place in China by virtual office service provider in Hongkong);
2)visit their address in Hongkong if you can, that is always the best way to tell the shell company, make sure you visit them secretly as virtual office service provider also provide temporary office for those shell company.
3)Mostly they have a company account(which is positive as I mentioned in other company verification articles), but they open account in small foreign bank. State-run banks like Bank of China, Commercial and Industrial Bank of China, China Construction Bank, Agricultural Bank of China are very strict in opening company account. In mainland China, a company account in state-run banks are way safer if you are going to pursue your rights in mainland China.
4) check the company name with The Cyber Search Centre of the Integrated Companies Registry Information System at
