Toyota 1AZ engine problems and malfunctions
1. Thread stripping inside the block cylinder. That is the main problem for all the AZs. The common signs of the trouble include antifreeze on the cylinder block back wall and engine overheat. Further, you can face a loss of shape. Finally, you will need to purchase a new cylinder block. To solve that problem, you should renovate the thread or buy a 1AZ block of cylinders produced after 2007. That usually helps to eliminate the trouble.
2. Engine vibration at idle. You can feel that, if any, when turns decrease to 500-600 rpm. That is typical of the engine and preventing the sort of problem can become quite a challenge. You should clean the idle control valve, throttle body, injectors and inspect all the engine mounts. Doing that, you will be able to decrease vibrations and you won’t overcome the hurdle completely.
3. Jerks at accelerating. Clean the throttle body and remove soot out of the intake manifold. That must help. The 1AZ is susceptible to soot formation. If there is any faultiness left, then you should inspect the VVTi and oxygen sensor.
Besides, the models designed for a Japanese market are equipped with a EGR system and have a problem associated with soot formation resulting in unsteady idle run and power decrease. To solve that, you need to cleanse the EGR valve or block it. The 1AZ’s overheat threatens with a loss of the cylinder block’s shape and spoiling it. FSE (D4) modifications greatly depend on fuel quality. If you keep refuelling your engine with a low-quality petrol, your high pressure fuel pump and injectors will be disarranged, and they are quite costly. The timing chain is normal, cannot be strained and not that troublesome. The cylinder block is irreparable, but engine life is quite high: it reaches 200,000 miles (300,000 km) of mileage.
In general, if the 1AZ type of motor is good and thoroughly maintained, it will serve you long and won’t give you much trouble
Common problems and 1ZZ durability
1. High oil consumption. That problem is most commonly faced in 2002 engines. The main reasons resulting that are valve stem seals and piston rings. Do a major overhaul of the 1ZZ engine you will sort it out. The motors made after 2005 lack the above-described lack that disrepair.
2. Knocking noise inside the 1ZZ. As a rule, it is a stretch of the timing chain that makes troubles. It usually happens after running 100,000 miles (150,000 km) of mileage. In order to tackle the problem, you will have to replace the timing chain with a new one. If the timing chain is alright, one should check the belt tensioner.
3. If rough idling, you should clean the throttle body unit and idle air control valve.
4. If some vibration are heard in the 1ZZ, it’s normal. If any strong vibration, you should check the posterior mount of the engine.
Beside that, the 1ZZ is greatly exposed to overheat. That can easily result a loss of cylinder block shape and its malfunction. Check the cooling system regularly, use good engine oil and your 1ZZ-FE will serve you long and without any problems. The engine designed after 2005 will be the least troublesome.
