Visa liberalisation for Georgia: time to deliver

European Parliament Rapporteur on visa liberalisation for Georgia, Mariya Gabriel MEP, strongly recommends adopting the proposal by the European Commission to exempt Georgian citizens from visa requirements for entering the EU.

During the presentation of her report in the European Parliament's Civil Liberties Committee today, the lead negotiator stressed that the visa exemption would reinforce the EU's relationship with Georgia, as well as its European prospects: "With visa liberalisation, the progress in our relationship moves up a gear. This will provide the strongest momentum in fortifying our partnership, with concrete benefits for Georgian citizens, as it allows easier, people-to-people contact, the deepening of cultural ties and of political dialogue," stated Mariya Gabriel.

"Georgia is a strategic partner in the EU neighbourhood and plays and important role in our Eastern Partnership. It is therefore in our mutual interest to cooperate closely," she added.

"Visa liberalisation should also be proof of the country's reforms. We in the European Parliament, are focusing on checking whether each of the criteria is fulfilled, as well as monitoring political commitment to the shared EU values of democracy, human rights and freedom. It is important to make sure that all possible issues that can be easily politicised are clarified now, in the interests of both citizens and our partnership," outlines Gabriel.

She stressed that the criteria that lead to liberalisation must be continuously met in the future, after the entry into force of the decision: "The Commission has to further monitor closely any developments in relation to the criteria that initially led to the transfer of Georgia to the list of visa-free countries. In particular, it is our common challenge to fight potential migratory and security threats."
