DAWN ‘THE FAUN’ MCCARTHY was raised in Spokane,Washington. Her parents were two piano teachers from Chicago. Among a large family, she was weaned on Yma Sumac , Heintje , Led Zeppelin , and piano music. Dawn has been singing her songs onstage since 1991.
FAUN FABLES began in 1997 when Dawn left the bands and cabarets of New York City, traveling and singing solo in Europe. The first Faun Fables album was recorded after this in 1998, called EARLY SONG. "These were the first songs I attempted as a soloist."
MOTHER TWILIGHT (2001), a map of songs for the underworld, was hand glued and pedalled to several folks along the interstates and country roads of North America 2001-2003, gathering the attention of Drag City Records in Chicago.
In 2002, the Faun Fables musical theater show THE TRANSIT RIDER premiered in San Francisco, inspired by Dawn’s existential years in NYC. The soundtrack will be released in the near future, along with a revision of the show.
FAMILY ALBUM (2004) was the Drag City debut, "a nice, gangly portrait of what my creative world had been in recent times," including family members and some of the rich, artistic community of the Bay Area, California.
