United Federation of Planets
Founded in the year 2161, the United Federation of Planets is an alliance of over a hundred alien worlds cooperating in common cause to meet mutual goals. The United Federation of Planets (often referred to simply as 'the Federation') was established to allow member worlds to work together to facilitate such things as interstellar trade, diplomacy, scientific research, and mutual defense.
The Federation is governed by the Federation Council, composed of representatives from many Federation member worlds. The executive is comprised of the President and his staff. The principle seat of government is Earth, with the Federation Council's chambers located in the city of San Francisco and the President's office in Paris.
A socialist state has evolved in the Federation in which economics and finances have grown to be less and less of a factor in the daily lives of its citizens. Almost all goods and services are controlled directly by the Federation government. This has not always the case, however. Even as recently as the 23rd Century, Starfleet officers were paid for their service in the fleet, but changing times and social climate forced (or allowed) such changes to take place. The 24th Century Federation political stance of capitalism as a bane of society has made relations with some powers tense, especially relations with the Ferengi.
Starfleet is the military arm of the Federation and has seen many actions in the past two hundred years. Early hostilities with the Klingons lasted almost a century until 2267 with the signing of the Organian Peace Treaty. This peace was eventually finalized with the signing of the Khitomer Accords in 2293. Wars have also been fought with the Romulans, Tholians, and Cardassians along Federation borders. Despite these conflicts the Federation has remained a stable political entity and at the forefront of technological achievements.
Vulcan High Command
The Vulcans are a pacifistic race that treasure logic and knowledge above all else. Such has not always been the case, however, and the Vulcans have seen their fair share of war and strife. For the Vulcans, the battle between logic and passion continue to affect their society.
Founding members of the Federation, the Vulcans are the Humans seniors when it comes to space travel. Much of the technology the Federation would later develop, from deflector shields to phasers, owe a great deal to the Vulcan mastery of sciences in these areas.
Despite their status within Federation politics, the Vulcans remain highly aloof.
Klingon Empire
The Klingon Empire has existed for over fifteen-hundred years since its founding by Kahless the Unforgettable, the legendary Klingon leader who unified the people of Qo'Nos. During much of its history, the Klingon Empire was under the singular rule of an Emperor, but this changed over time. By the 2060's, the Klingon High Council -- originally a council of advisors to the Emperor -- had taken control of the government. After the High Council's rise to power the position of Emperor was dissolved and an elected Chancellor took its place as the authoritative leader of the Klingon people. Another Emperor would not sit on the Klingon throne until 2369 when a clone of Kahless was allowed to assume the position in a ceremonial role.
The Klingons had already carved out a sizeable empire by the time they made contact with the Humans in 2151. Following the establishment of the United Federation of Planets several years later, the Klingon Empire would come to view the Federation and Humans as a threat to their national security.
Several disastrous encounters in the early 23rd Century lead to escalating tensions between the Klingon Empire and Federation, bringing them into direct conflict on several occasions. By 2267, negotiations between the Klingons and Federation had begun to breakdown and both sides were preparing for war. The Organians forced peace upon both parties temporarily, but even they became flustered trying to get the two younger races to adhere to the principles of the treaty and eventually gave up on the whole affair.
During this period, the Klingons entered into a brief military alliance with the Romulan Star Empire. In exchange for cloaking technology and other resources, the Klingons gave the Romulans antiquated warship hulls, advanced warp technologies, and disruptor weaponry.
In 2293, the Klingon moon of Praxis suffered a catastrophic explosion due to over mining and dangerous operational conditions. The explosion resulted in ecological damage to Qo'Nos and threw the Klingon Empire into chaos. The overextended Klingon Empire found itself no longer able to support the economic burden of its large star fleet following the ecological damage done to their homeworld. Klingon Chancellor Gorkon extended a hand of friendship to the Federation with the promise of ending 70 years of hostilities between their two nations. Gorkon was later assassinated by enemies of peace on both sides of the conflict, but the historic Khitomer Peace Accords that he initiated would lay the foundation for a lasting peace between the Klingon Empire and the United Federation of Planets.
The Klingon Empire again fell into chaos in 2367 when Chancellor K'mpec was assassinated by means of poison, a method found highly dishonorable in Klingon tradition. The resultant power struggle between the forces of the newly selected Chancellor, Gowron, and the forces of family Duras plunged the Empire into civil war. Support for Duras' heir, Toral, crumbled after the Federation blockaded the Klingon/Romulan border, keeping Romulan aid from reaching Duras supply depots. Gowron's forces subsequently defeated their opposition and he was installed as the new Chancellor.
The Dominion War succeeded in destabilizing the Alpha and Beta Quadrants, and the Klingon Empire was one of the first to be played for fools by the Founders. Klingon paranoia following the collapse of the Cardassian military government in 2372 prompted the Klingon Empire to invade the Cardassian Union. The Federation condemned these actions. In response, the Klingons revoked the Khitomer Accords and expelled all Federation citizens from the Klingon Empire. Klingon/Federation relations decayed even further with open conflict and planetary assaults occurring along their mutual border.
In truth the Klingon Empire had been compromised, a changeling having replaced Klingon General Martok. This imposter's mission was to advise the High Council to proceed with actions that would further destabilize the Alpha Quadrant. The deception was eventually uncovered by Federation operatives and the changeling neutralized. Following these events the Klingons reinstated the Khitomer Accords and joined the fight against the Dominion alongside the Federation, and later the Romulans.
Klingon Chancellor Gowron was killed in honorable combat by Federation Starfleet officer Worf following politically-motivated actions taken by Gowron that squandered the lives of Klingon warriors. Though it was Worf's right to take Gowron's place and lead the Empire, he stepped aside and allowed General Martok (the true general was found in the Gamma Quadrant, imprisoned by the Dominion) to ascend to the chancellorship.
Romulan Star Empire
The Romulan Star Empire is the most enigmatic of the major races in the Alpha and Beta Quadrants. Controlling a vast region of territory, the Romulans still remained a shrouded mystery even into the 24th Century.
The Romulans are an offshoot of the Vulcan people who were violently exiled from Vulcan two thousand years ago. Using their primitive space ships they found their way to the systems of Romulus and Remus and formed their new homeworlds. The Romulans embrace the emotions that their brethren have shunned and are a passionate people, but one steeped in arrogance and a history of violence.
The Romulan's history has been marked by several periods of extreme isolationism. After their war with Earth in the 2160's, the Romulans disappeared from the political scene until 2266 when a lone Romulan Vas'Hatham Bird of Prey crossed the Federation/Romulan Neutral Zone and began destroying Federation outposts along the border as a test of the Federation's resolve. Demonstrating the before unheard of cloaking technology, the Romulans were successful in showing the Federation that they remained a power to be reckoned with.
During the late 2260s, the Romulan and Klingon Empires entered into a brief alliance. The Romulans gave the Klingons cloaking technology while the Klingons gave the Romulans advanced warp engine technologies and sold them several Klingon warship hulls. By the 2280's, the Klingons were using vessels classed as "birds of prey", a traditionally Romulan designation in origin. This can only be a testimony to the amount of technological and cultural exchange the two races shared for that short period of time. It is unknown why the alliance crumbled, but mutual distrust between the powers is likely to blame.
Following the Tomed Incident in 2311, the Romulan Star Empire again went into an extended period of isolationism. This was broken on several occasions, notably when the Romulan Empire attacked the Klingon outpost on Narendra III in 2344. The attack devastated the Narendra colony, but the Romulans could not hold the world and were forced to retreat and resume their defensive stance from behind their borders. The event actually improved relations between the Klingon Empire and Federation due to the intervention of the U.S.S. Enterprise-C which attempted to aid in the defense of the Klingon colony. The Romulans again attacked the Klingons in 2346, this time striking at the important border outpost at Khitomer. The colony was razed, but again the Romulans were unable to hold the planet and were forced out of Klingon space. These strikes continued for several years until once more the Romulans retreated into complete isolationism.
The Romulans again began taking an interest in galactic politics in 2364 after a series of Romulan outposts were found destroyed near the Federation neutral zone. The Romulans most notably practiced excellent programs of covert operations and diplomatic subterfuge. During the brief Klingon Civil War (2367-68), the Romulans aided the forces of house Duras in its bid for control. If not for a Federation blockade utilizing a tachyon detection web was put in place along the Romulan/Klingon border the Romulans may well have been able to successfully place Duras' illegitimate son, Toral, in power, thus allowing them to use Toral and his aunts, Lursa and B'Etor, as pawns with which to control the Klingon Empire to Romulan advantage.
In 2368, the Romulans attempted to reinvade Vulcan under the guise of reunification -- a goal championed by Federation Ambassador Spock. The ruse was discovered by the Federation in time to intercept the Romulan fleet. However, it was the Romulans who then destroyed the Vulcan starships they had stolen and converted into troop transports, with the Romulan troops still onboard.
During the Dominion War, the Romulans initially signed a non-aggression treaty with the Dominion and were considered nominal Dominion allies. However, after Federation operatives managed to successfully plant falsified reports of Dominion plans to invade Romulan space, the Romulans joined the fight alongside the Klingons and Federation, both of which had already suffered heavy losses in the year of fighting. The Romulan investment in the war was telling, and the presence of their immense D'deridex Warbirds in battle helped to turn the tide of the war in the Allies favor.
Cardassian Union The world of Cardassia (also commonly referred to as Cardassia Prime) is the homeworld of the Cardassian people. In the distant past, the early Cardassians were a peaceful and spiritual people that built a glorious civilization renowned for its beautiful architectural and aesthetic design works. Though these ruins and relics were considered some of the most magnificent in the galaxy they would later be raped and cannibalized by the modern Cardassian government in order to finance government and military projects.
Cardassia is resource poor and the Cardassian people faced disaster after disaster over the past several centuries. Plagues and natural calamities taxed the Cardassian's spirits and left millions dead. With dwindling natural resources available on their homeworld they were forced to expand in order to provide for their people.
It was during this period in Cardassian history that the military staged a dramatic coup, seizing the reigns of government from civilian authorities. The semblance of civilian control was maintained, but in truth it was the military and its commanders that decided Cardassian policies. New weapons, technologies, and worlds were acquired by the Cardassian Union through a series of bloody conquests. The Cardassians had gone from a single resource-starved world to the surveyors of a small empire.
During one of the Cardassian's more recent expansion efforts they came into direct conflict with the United Federation of Planets. Battles over territorial claims go back to as early as 2350. The protracted border conflict was finally settled in 2366 by a treaty negotiated by Ambassador Sarek of Vulcan.
The treaty was violated by the Federation the following year (2367) when a rogue Federation Nebula-class starship, the U.S.S. Phoenix, crossed the Cardassian border and began attacking Cardassian vessels and destroyed a research outpost. Another treaty was signed later that year, instituting a wary armistice between the Federation and Cardassian governments.
By 2369, the Cardassian Union had begun to fall into a state of decay. Due to budget shortfalls and general unrest, the Cardassians were forced to evacuate many of the worlds on their borders, most of which had been secured through violent means over the past century. Bajor was among the worlds freed during this recession of the Cardassian borders. The relationship between the newly freed Bajorans their old oppressors was mended in 2371 when Cardassian representatives arrived in the Bajor system to sign a historic peace treaty.
2372 saw the fall of the Cardassian Union government into civil unrest. The Detapa Council, a purely civilian segment of the previous government, was retained and a new framework built around it so as to secure the civilian's control of the government, lest it fall back into the hands of the military. These actions prompted the Klingons -- fearing Dominion involvement -- to declare war on the Cardassians and invade dozens of Cardassian colony worlds along their mutual border. The resultant destruction and near assassination of the new Cardassian ruling body left the Cardassian Union in economic ruins and politically unstable.
The Federation, wishing to maintain ties with the new civilian Cardassian government, sent the Cardassian relief supplies including twelve industrial replicators. The replicators, however, were captured by Maquis forces.
The Cardassian Union was again overthrown in 2373 when military commander Gul Dukat secretly negotiated an alliance with the Dominion. The Detapa Council that he had helped to protect and advise during the previous year was dissolved, leaving him the supreme commander of the Cardassian people.
By 2375, the Dominion War was nearing its end and public sentiment on Cardassia Prime and its colonies was becoming more and more anti-Dominion. Many terrorist organizations sprang up, their goal to wear away at the impressive Dominion presence in their territory in an attempt to get them to leave Cardassian space. During the closing days of the war, an all out revolt on Cardassia Prime prompted the Dominion to begin leveling entire cities. This attempt to quell the rebellion backfired, and the remaining Cardassian military personnel -- both on planet and in space -- immediately revolted against their former Dominion allies. The contribution of the surviving Cardassian naval force during those last few hours was a great help to the beleaguered Allies who had already taken heavy losses to Jem'Hadar warships and the Cardassian planetary defense grid.
In the end Cardassia was in ruins. Over 800 million men, women, and children had been slaughtered by the Dominion and their economic infrastructure was destroyed.
Following the war, the Cardassians began the long process of rebuilding their world and their colonies. However, it will be a very long time before the Cardassians will ever be a major power again in the galaxy.
Dominion The Dominion is a powerful alliance of alien races hailing from the Gamma Quadrant. Founded two millennia ago by the Founders, an enigmatic race of shapeshifters, the Dominion is ruled with an iron fist by these creatures and their genetically engineered thrall races, of which include both the Jem'Hadar and the Vorta. The Founders have remained isolated and distant from the rest of the Dominion, most of their number remaining on their homeworld where they join into a collective existence known as the Great Link. The Founders use the military of the Dominion to force compliance and subservience from the worlds controlled (either willingly or unwillingly) by the Dominion.
When the Dominion learned of the existence of the Bajoran wormhole connecting the Alpha and Gamma Quadrants they immediately suspected the worst. The Founders had always been distrustful of the 'solids,' and this threat to their security could not go unchecked. The changelings proceeded to infiltrate the Alpha Quadrant powers, reaching to the highest levels of leadership in the government and military of many of the powers. There they gathered vital intelligence data on the tactical and political situation on the foreign end of the wormhole. It became obvious to the Dominion that none of the powers were a credible military threat to the Dominion; instead, the Alpha Quadrant was viewed as an easy avenue of expansion.
With cursory data collected, the Dominion began the eviction of Alpha Quadrant powers from the Gamma Quadrant. Without warning the Jem'Hadar fell upon them, destroying entire colonies and starships alike. The Bajoran colony at New Bajor was razed while the Federation U.S.S. Odyssey was destroyed in a sneak attack. The future invasion of the Alpha Quadrant was evident to all parties and both began preparing for war.
In 2373 something entirely unexpected happened. The Cardassian Union, still recovering from the collapse of its military regime, was overthrown again when Detapa Council military advisor Gul Dukat sold out the civilian government by allowing Cardassia Prime with the Dominion. The alliance with Cardassians allowed the Dominion a strategic foothold in the Alpha Quadrant.
While the Dominion built up their military resources in Cardassian space, Vorta diplomatic envoys secured non-aggression and alliance treaties with many Alpha Quadrant powers, notably the Romulan Star Empire, Tholian Assembly, Miradorn, and Bajorans. The Federation saw the alignment of the Bajorans with the Dominion as a dark omen and set forth establishing fixed defenses around the mouth of the Bajoran wormhole in the form of self-replicating mines. This move prevented the free movement of Dominion forces from the Gamma Quadrant to the Alpha Quadrant.
The Dominion response to the Federation's actions was quick and deadly. A Dominion strike against station Deep Space Nine in the Bajor system. Simultaneously, the Federation and Klingons attacked Dominoin shipyards at Torros III, setting back Dominion production and damaging their tenuously established infrastructure. Though they were unsuccessful in securing the wormhole they were able to inflict severe casualties upon the defenders and briefly held station Deep Space Nine.
The Dominion was winning their war against the Federation and Klingons until the Romulan Star Empire broke their non-aggression treaty and allied with the other Alpha Quadrant powers against the Dominion. The combined fleet operations the followed, including the battle in the Chin'Toka system, signal a turning point in the war at which point the Dominion began to take unacceptable losses that would lead to them ultimately losing the war.
The Dominion enjoyed a brief shifting of the tide of the war in their favor when the Breen Confederacy joined the Dominion in their fight against the other Alpha Quadrant races. The use of the Breen's new energy draining weaponry dealt heavy losses to the Allies until they finally adapted to its effects. Again the Dominion found themselves unable to orchestrate a suitable offensive to strike back at the Alpha Quadrant powers. Additionally, the Founders had contracted a disease that was slowly killing them (the disease was, in fact, a biological weapon developed by the Federation and unleashed upon the Founders).
The decision was made for all Dominion forces to fall back to Cardassia Prime. There they hoped to hold out long enough to prolong the conflict to the point where their attackers would either not accept the cost of the war in lives and equipment or until enough new construction vessels could be built to turn the tide in the fight. A desperate final assault by the Alpha Quadrant powers and the mutiny of the Cardassian military signaled the end of the Dominion War. The Founders surrendered and signed a peace treaty ending the conflict. The disease that affected the Founders was later cured when Odo, a shapeshifter found in the Bajor system many years ago, rejoined the Great Link.
Ferengi Alliance The Ferengi Alliance, a vast mercantile empire, has for centuries enjoyed strong trade relations (usually heavily in their favor) with the developing worlds and minor powers on their borders. The Ferengi Alliance governs and regulates trade within Ferengi territories. The Ferengi do not have a military arm to their government, but the plethora of well armed trade and mercenary ships give them a great pool of resources to draw on in times of crisis or emergency.
The existence of the Ferengi was a mystery to the Federation before their unexpected encounter at Delphi Ardu in 2364. It was later learned that an unknown alien vessel that attacked the U.S.S. Stargazer some years earlier at Zeta Maxia was, indeed, a Ferengi craft.
Ferenginar, the homeworld of the Ferengi people, is a wet, dismal place but is the cultural and economic center of the Ferengi Alliance, being the location of the Sacred Marketplace and the Tower of Commerce.
The Ferengi are interesting in that they did not themselves develop warp technologies, but instead purchased them from an unknown third party. This is a habit that would continue far into the future, with the Ferengi Alliance and its individual members purchasing rather than developing much of the technologies they now call their own.
The Ferengi have not enjoyed an overly warm association with the United Federation of Planets since their first contact. The Ferengi are reviled for their sexist treatment of the female portion of their population and their extreme capitalistic beliefs. Some believe that the Federation's publicly hostile stance against the Ferengi is really a byproduct of the Federation's desire to maintain a stranglehold on trade and development of their lesser member worlds.
The Ferengi were one of the few Alpha Quadrant races not involved in the Dominion War. This spared them the devastation suffered by the participants of that conflict. During that time the Ferengi Alliance was going through major political, social, and economic upheaval brought on by reforms instituted by Grand Nagus Zek. It is unknown what ramifications the Zek's policies will have on the future of the Ferengi Alliance, nor is it entirely certain in which direction Grand Nagus Rom will lead the Ferengi in the future.
Bajoran Bajoran civilization has existed for over a half-million years. A contemplative and spiritual people, the early Bajorans saw little need in reaching to the stars. It is known, however, that the Bajoran people held limited interstellar abilities via primitive solar sail space craft.
Bajoran culture declined greatly during the Cardassian Occupation, from 2328 to 2369, during which time the Cardassian Union dominated the Bajoran people. The Cardassians made heavy use of forced labor camps and attempted to strip the Bajorans of their cultural identity. Cardassian strip mining of Bajor lead to planet-wide ecological devastation. It was the Cardassian Occupation of Bajor that forced the Bajoran people to throw off their strict caste based culture and actively fight against their oppressors.
The Bajoran people successfully repelled the Cardassians from their world in 2369 and a provisional government was established. The United Federation of Planets was called upon to provide assistance during this time of chaos and turbulence. The Federation assumed control of the abandoned Cardassian mining station Terok Nor (which the Federation renamed Deep Space Nine) and acted as a deterrent to future Cardassian reprisals against the Bajoran people.
The discovery of the Bajoran wormhole (which the Bajorans called the "Celestial Temple") made Bajor a site of scientific importance. Later, Bajor became a strategically important location when the Dominion began their invasion of the Alpha Quadrant.
Tholian Assembly
The Tholians are the very definition of heavy-worlders. Their homeworld defies easy definition. A very large, moonless, mineral-rich planet with the kind of layered atmosphere usually associated with a gas giant, but very close to its primary star, which has stripped much of the upper atmosphere from the world over the millennia. The result of this rather strange combination is a silicon-based life form with a circulatory fluid that solidifies at temperatures and pressures similar to Terran norms, surviving in excess of 450 degrees Kelvin and 4 gravities of pressure.
The Tholians evolved from seasonal omnivorous analogues -- the closest terrestrial example would be a bear. They are not social creatures in the sense that humans are, but work well together when united by a common goal. Their society is based on the establishing of tasks by a central board (whose purpose is to set tasks and priority for the Assembly).
Given those features, their progress toward space is readily understood. They made many of the scientific developments that catapulted other species into space, but while strongly territorial, they aren’t particularly acquisitive. The enormous surface area of their home planet, including continents the size of Earth, provided more than enough to sate any urge they had to explore. Their society is also poorly geared to a lack of communication and central authority, and their atmosphere and the sheer size of Tholia are poorly geared to satellite communication.
Subspace radio communication made the exploration of space viable. Of course, having discovered subspace, warp travel was not far behind. They hold the singular distinction of having warp travel before ever venturing offworld.
Given the living conditions they consider ideal, it's a wonder that Tholians conflict with other races at all. The fact that they do is partially tied to their position near both the Romulan Star Empire and Klingon Empire, but also due to their extremely territorial nature. Generally, they do not play well with others.
While they should be able to peacefully cohabitate with other powers given their totally different requirements for habitability, their territorial nature, mining techniques (involving pulling small, Earth-sized planets apart and mining the new asteroid belt) and 'terraforming' techniques (again, using web to tow gas giants closer to their primary star) make them bad to have as close neighbors.
Andorians
The Andorians are a blue-skinned race of aliens from the Epsilon Eridani star system. Staunch supporters of the Federation, the Andorians were one of its founding members.
In the days before the founding of the United Federation of Planets, the Andorians were viewed as a loose cannon in the region. The Andorians had been involved in a drawn out series of border disputes against the Vulcans that ended in several minor conflicts along the Andorian/Vulcan border.
Within the Federation the Andorians became well known for their efficiency in ship construction, Andorians winning many lucrative Federation ship building contracts.
During the Dominion War the Andorians fought alongside other Federation members. At the bleakest point in the war Dominion forces were close to attacking the Andorian homeworld.
Borg Collective
The Borg were a pseudo-race of cybernetic beings, or cyborgs, from the Delta Quadrant. No single individual truly existed within the Borg Collective (with the possible sole exception of the Borg Queen), as all Borg were linked into a hive mind. Their ultimate goal was the attainment of 'perfection' through the forcible assimilation of diverse sentient species, technologies, and knowledge. As a result, the Borg were among the most powerful and feared powers in the galaxy, without really being a true race at all.
Nausicaans
The Nausicaans are a violent race of humanoids located within the Federation's borders. The Nausicaans are not Federation members however; rather, the territories controlled by the Nausicaans have simply been surrounded by those of Federation interests and member states. This situation has not helped to lessen Federation/Nausicaan tensions. Many Nausicaans resent the Federation influence and control over the region and try their best to disrupt Federation activites in the region.
Before the rise of the Federation to power, the Nausicaans were a relatively major provincial power in the region. Nausicaan mercenaries and pirates roamed the starlanes, frequenting the trading centers at Rigel and Risa.
Orion Syndicate
The Orions are a race of green-skinned humanoids known for their dubious enterprises. For centuries, the Orions have operated in a state that can best be described as controlled anarchy. The local Orion governments control little more than the spaceports and population centers surrounding them. All other matters are handled by the corporations and syndicates operating in the region. This extreme lassez-faire attitude within Orion space makes them a popular commercial center for reputable and disreputable traders alike.
A strong black market trade is run through Orion space, including the sale of drugs, weapons, and Orion slave women. Such darker business matters are usually handled by crime syndicates operating in secret or using fake corporations as a front for their dealings. The most powerful and far reaching of these entities is the Orion Syndicate itself, a criminal organization with its fingers in illegal activities throughout the Alpha Quadrant. The Orion Syndicate is, of course, only one of hundreds of syndicates that operate throughout Orion space and beyond, but it is the most influential and the one entity that most outsiders associate with Orion society.
In 2267, the Orions attempted to sabotage the Babel Conference in order to protect their own interests. The Orions had been raiding the Coridan system, stealing valuable dilithium shipments, and it was hoped that their attack would disrupt the Coridan's admission process into the Federation. The attempt failed, and the Coridan admission into the Federation forced the Orion groups in the system to give up their lucrative endeavors lest they come under Federation attack.
Son'a Empire
The Son'a are an aggressive, militaristic race who dominate several less advanced worlds along the Federation/Romulan border. The Son'a were banished from the Bak'u planet following an unsuccessful coup. The nomadic outcasts eventually conquered the Tarlac and Ellora species and used them as forced labor to build a formidable Son'a military machine.
The Son'a are a dying people, but they remain a persist force. The Son'a briefly allied with rogue Federation interests in a failed attempt to capture the Bak'u planet. They later sided with the Dominion during the Dominion War, using their advanced genetics and biological technologies to assist in the production of ketracel white to supply the Dominion's Jem'Hadar soldiers.
Talarian Empire
The Talarians are a race of humanoids bordering Federation and Klingon Territories. Fiercly proud, the Talarians have not yet come under the domination of either of the major powers on their borders. Talarian society is patriarchal and encourages warlike behavior. All young males serve in the Talarians armed forces, and many ships are used as training vessels. The fact that the Talarians have such a large pool of starship crews and ground troops is a leading factor in why their people have not yet been conquered.
The Talarians have been in conflict with the Federation for most of the 2350's, including a Talarian assault on Galen IV in 2356 that left the Federation colony destroyed.
Xindi
The Xindi are actually a coalition of five different species that all attained sentience at essentially the same time on the planet Xindi Prime. These six species are denoted by their phyiscal appearance: Primate, Reptilian, Insectoid, Sloth, and Aquatic. There was a sixth intelligent species native to their homeworld, the Xindi-Avians, but they were destroyed during the wars that led to the ultimate destruction of that planet.
In the aftermath of the war, the remaining Xindi banded together for survival. A council was formed wherein each species of Xindi held equal voice. Together they began to weld together an uneasy alliance of the previously hostile peoples.
The perceived threat posed by the planet Earth led the Xindi to begin building a planetkiller weapon.
Yridian Empire
The Yridian Empire is located in a volatile region of space bordering the Federation, Klingons, Cardassian, and Romulan empires. Because of this precarious placement the Yridians have realized that the only way to retain their sovereignty is to play all sides against the middle.
The Yridians are most closely aligned to the Romulans and are one of the few foreign powers whose commercial shipping are allowed access to lucrative Romulan markets.
In addition to trading commodities the Yridians are also known as one of the galaxy's foremost intelligence dealers. Yridian spies are well worth their price and can carry vital secrets across space.
The Yridian imperial military relies heavily on exported hulls and technologies from the Romulan Star Empire. The Yridians rely on Romulan disruptors for ship mounted weapons, rarely equipping their ships with Federation or Cardassian phasers.
Krenim Imperium The Krenim once controlled a vast empire, but as with all empires their power waned and what is left of the Imperium is only a vestige of their former glory.
One Krenim, Arronax, developed a Temporal Weapons Ship that was capable of changing history. Arronax attempted to use this weapon to change history, but his attempts were ultimately thwarted by the Voyager crew.
Malon The Malon are a technologically advanced race from the Delta Quadrant. Unlike other races, the Malon do not have any applications for the antimatter waste generated by their planetary industry. Instead they dump it in underdeveloped regions of space outside of their control. Most contact with the Malon thus comes by way of their waste transport freighters, transporting their deadly cargo away from Malon space.
Species 8472 This advanced race of extra-dimensional aliens was locked in battle with the Borg -- and winning -- when the lost Federation starship Voyager encountered them in the 2370s. Species 8472 (the Borg designation for the species) operate wholly organic starships that are at home in their native fluidic space. Incredibly destructive, Species 8472's bioships are more than a match for even the Borg.
Gorn AllianceAccording to Orion privateer Harrad-Sar in 2154, the Gorn government, known as the Gorn Hegemony, "brew the finest Meridor in the five star systems.
An intelligent, bipedal reptilian species who fought with Captain Kirk on stardate 3045.6 under the assumption that the Federation was threatening the Gorn claim to the planet Cestus III.
AcamarianPlanet: Acamar III. The people of Acamar III finally forged peace a century ago after generations of bloody clan wars. One group of various clansmen who couldn't accept the new peace, the Gatherers, broke off to prey as marauders upon neighboring trade routes and outposts; they rejected amnesty until Captain Picard helped force the sides into talks and a truce circa stardate 43422. Humanoid in appearance, they have a distinguishing vertical crease in their forehead above the nose and an almost ornamental skin coloration on one cheek. Their blood is a rare iron-copper composite unique to them. Their science is advanced enough to download data to the U.S.S. Enterprise by subspace link. Income taxes and plenty of police bureaucracy are standard fare there.
AkritiriansAdvanced humanoid Delta Quadrant race with basic interstellar spaceflight, perhaps warp-capable. A dictatorship controls the planet, now dealing with an Open Sky group fighting to overthrow it.
Felons are kept in an isolated spacegoing station — as the U.S.S. Voyager's Paris and Kim discovers when wrongly sent there. Pardons or rehearings in convictions and sentencing are never heard.
AldeanPlanet: Aldea. An ancient humanoid culture considered a myth by outsiders, thanks to a planet-wide shield and cloaking device operated by the age-old computer Custodian, until discovered by the Galaxy-class Enterprise on stardate 41509. Over the last 30 years or so (as of 2364), the long-term shield interfered with the planet's ozone layer, causing radiation to leak through the layer and subsequently sterilizing the natives. The chore-saving Custodian freed Aldeans to reject materialism, turning to a code of square dealing to pursue arts and other interests — including data on galactic areas yet unknown to the Federation. However, over-dependence on the Custodian led Aldeans to an atrophying of science and engineering skills. Not only have the natives lost touch with areas such as calculus and energy generation, but doctors and scientists have been mystified by the health problem. After rescuing young hostages taken by the Aldeans to repopulate their world, Captain Picard pledges Federation aid to restore the culture to health as the people vow to change their ways.
AlgoliansOrigin: Algol System. A humanoid race which is distinguished physically by golden leathery skin with numerous small circular openings about the head, especially on their wide-set nostrils and atop their fluted head ridge similar to Klingons and Bolians. A native plays the culture's famed ceremonial rhythms for the reception ending the biannual trade conference at Betazed. Another native is among the delegates to the Federation Archaeological Council's annual symposium at Tagus III. Some Algolians have more muted head ridges, as seen among those on the Bajoran Space Station and Deep Space Nine, on stardates 46423.7 and 46844.3.
AlsauriansThe Alsaurians are treated as an under-class by the Mokra, which have seized control of the Alsaurian planet. The Mokra do not allow them to have communications equipment.
AmoebaOrigin: space. A giant single-celled creature which resembles an Earth amoeba but is magnified millions of times.
This space-roaming entity threatened to consume all life in the galaxy until it was confronted and stopped by the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701.
Angosian Civilized humanoids of Angosia III, typically thoughtful and intelligent.
Due to their pacifism in matters of fighting, they used mind control and biochemicals to create the ultimate fighting soldiers to win their Tarsian War, which has subsequently past. Peace, however, found the Angosians unable (or unwilling to take the time) to reverse the effects of these alterations. After several incidents involving these violent soldiers, the fearful Angosians voted to banish the soldiers to a penal colony on Lunar V.
Shortly before stardate 43489.2, however, escapees broke free to take over the capital city, demanding they receive help to be able to return to their homes. The veterans don't attack unless provoked, but they are programmed to survive.
AntedeanPlanet: Antide III
Ichthyohumanoid species which are fish-like in appearance and have purplish-silver scales.
The natives of Antede III have been seen by very few humans. Their preferred method of dealing with the trauma of space travel is a self-induced catatonic state, during which they can rest standing up. Their half-shut eyes fully open upon awakening, a process that takes several hours. They then proceed to eat large quantities of vermicula .
On stardate 42859.2, several Antedeans were revealed by Ambassador Lwaxana Troi to be conspiratory assassins bent on sabotaging their planet's Federation membership conference on Pacifica.
AquansThe race of sentient humanoids living beneath the waters of the planet Argo are unknown to the Federation prior of 2269. When the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise investigates the world, its officers interact with the Aquans. They learn that the green-skinned people had once been air-breathers, but when the landmasses of the planet were submerged, they had adapted to underwater living thanks to a medically-induced mutation. They now live in Aqua-City, a place created from coral, deep in an underwater trench. There is a generation gap between older Aquans, who wish to stay below the water at all costs, and young Aquans, who are interested in rebuilding the surface world on what is left of the landmasses there.
The Aquans are governed by a Ruling Tribunal. Head of the group is Domar, the High Tribune, and while the group is mostly male, it has at least one female, a young woman named Rila. When Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock are caught "spying" on the Aquans in 2269, the Tribunal hears their case. There is also a Junior Tribunal, made up of younger members of the race. Aquan rules are called "ordainments."
