Biography :
Autechre are an elusive group and it is difficult to find information about them.
This biography has been written following hours of research on Google, Wikipedia and newspapers found at the dump to form the definitive history of one (x2) of music’s pioneers.
Many people don’t realise that Autechre is actually two human beings who make music. The two, now ageing, members of the group are Sean Booth and Rob Brown.
Rob Brown was born on 10th April 1968 in Ontario Canada and in addition to making electronic music played right wing in the National Hockey League for eleven seasons. He was drafted 67th overall by the in the 1986 NHL draft entry and statistically his best season was 1988-89. Why this was his best year I don’t know because I hate hockey. In 1988 he played for Team Canada in the Junior World Championships.
During 1987 he moved to Rochdale in North England to become a Mancunian and we assume he commuted back to the NHL to play hockey until his retirement. The change of location may explain his improved form although this can’t be proven.
Following his move and not being used to his new geographical area, Rob got stuck in the middle of “Sudden” roundabout and it was up to a gas fitter called Sean Booth to help him out.
Sean Booth was born in 1912 and following his death in World War II there is very little about his movement until his birth in 1973. His past war time experience led to his getting the job as gas fitter (I understand the possible connotations of this comment but blame xceque at xltronic.com/mb) at the age of 14 and he was only three weeks into his job when he met the stricken Brown on the roundabout. The chance meeting was to change the lives of millions (well at least 54 people).
Following a spree of petty theft, the boys found they had amassed an array of electronic equipment, not all of which were car radios. They realised they could use these boxes to produce sounds and set about producing a 12” under the name Lego Feet in 1991. The name Autechre was anything but accidental. The first two letters were because of a sound in a track they made. The remaining letters were formed by typing the letters t, e, c, h, r and e on a keyboard. They initially tried typing the name on a music keyboard but came up with the name “ac#gecf#be” which didn’t fit in with the image they were looking for. This method was later utilised in the naming of tracks.
Stupid people think there is a complexity to B/B’s music that is cold and impenetrable. In reality it is just fucking good and not really all that complex. There is an obvious attention to detail but if you have a degree in mathematics, like someone I know has, their music is fundamentally basic. The signature sound of Autechre is a bit crushed cow’s moo.
Autechre have released tons of music under not only Lego Feet but also Gescom and 2Unlimited where Booth rapped and Brown dressed as a fit Dutch woman. They sometimes remix, play live and do tours.
Unconfirmed reports pieced together using the brains of others seem to imply that Rob Brown was tradgically killed in an all too common exploding vinyl incident at a pressing plant. The year was 1995 and the EP their eyes were watching being pressed was Anti. As the duo had already gained a significant following from SpecSaver frequenters, Warp decided to keep the accident quiet and replaced Rob with a man called Anthony Burbage. At the time, Anthony was an envirnomental technician in Sheffield and removed the contents of Warp's bins on a weekly basis. Anthony had a significant amount of input into the next EP and it was called Garbage, in tribute to his past. It has been stated that a vocal sample can be distinguished in garbagemx36 by listening through a 36 meter long metal tube. The vocal simply says "Rob is not dead", or "Rob is not deaf", or possibly "Rob is not jam". The later EP "We R Are Why" supposedly alludes to the dead half of the group. Статус кво поддерживал и третий релиз "Tri Repetae" (1995), который появился в двух версиях: расширенный сингл и двойной диск, включавший фактически два ЕР - "Anvil" и "Garbage". Этот альбом стал инаугурацией Autechre в лидеры электронного саунда. Если поначалу музыканты очевидно находились под влиянием Aphex Twin, то теперь они нащупали собственную дорогу, добиваясь гармонии между направленной энергией, оживленными аранжировками и оригинальными сэмплами. Получился разноплановый, почти безупречный и стильный альбом: фирменное сочетание мягких мелодий и жестких битов, цифровых барабанов, обволакивающих эмбиентных волн и синтезированных лупов.
