Why it’s called a “passport”
The word comes from the French phrase “passe port”, which literally means “pass through a port.”
In medievаl Europe, rulers or local authorities issued written documents to let travelers pass through city gates, ports, or across territories safely.
Over time, as sea travel became more common, these documents were specifically used for passing through seaports, and the name stuck.
Today, the word has expanded beyond just sea ports—it covers all international travel checkpoints (airports, land borders, etc.).
So, a passport is essentially a document that gives you legal permission to “pass through ports” and borders.
